Pull those little things out of your ears.

One thing that can help is to know your goal for each workout and it's place in your training program.

My brain is all over during long runs.  I make up stories in my head, I think about running, I think about racing, I think about my family, etc.

During hard runs, I  normally envision racing or stay tuned in to my body.... I will do a mileage/time countdown.  And I don't want to confess this because it seems lame, but I imagine talking about my good workout later if I want to quit, or having to tell people I bailed on my run, and it keeps me going.... so normally I keep going because I like it, then if I need to because I know the affect it will have on my overall fitness... but if it comes down to it, I will shame myself into finishing.

      I don't use music.

Thank you for sharing your tips and experiences. I tried running without music today, which turned out surprisingly well because my mind supplied the rhythms/lyrics instead. It's not too bad when I'm running outside. It's horrible on the treadmill because I can't stop checking the timer every 30 seconds.

I actually never listen to music on the treadmill or in the gym, because the machines are too loud and I don't want to damage my ears by cranking up the volume. Oh well, I guess I'll try to take my workouts outside from now on.

when i started working out the treadmill i would throw a towel over the display, stare into the mirror and focus on my form
Find a half marathon a year from now at a nice travel destination. Pay for the race and your plane tickets, and make your hotel reservations. Tell your friends and family about it...invite them to join you. Now you can't stop training! By the time your race comes, you'll be hooked! Worked for me...
I totally take back all those times I didn't want to nap when I was younger.

I actually like this idea very much! I may be just a newbie, but on my runs what keeps me from turning around is how down on myself I would be if I ended my run early. The other thing that keeps me going is the idea of me being able to run a marathon and how great I would feel afterwards, so try thinking of that when your running! Smile
