I had the MRI and the doctor said there is "swelling in the hip" and wants me to make a follow up appointment with him. I asked him if this means there is another tear or what but he hasn't replied. Now I am officially worried.

        Hi all!

Sadly I must join your group - I have my hip arthroscopy scheduled for March 23rd. My labrum has come off the bone due to impingement; my femur head has a bump on it and my socket bone sticks out a little too much. I wish I could do surgery sooner so it could be done with but I booked a pre-surgery vacation to Prague for a week first. Smile

I've read through all 71 pages of this forum, along with nearly everything linked here, thank you all for the amazing information!

Here's one question I have: seems like being able to use an upright bike is really awesome and helpful. The gym in my building only has one recumbent bike so my only option to use an upright would be at physical therapy. I'm wondering if it makes sense and would be worth it to just buy an affordable upright bike. There are a few highly rated, foldable, and affordable (around $100) ones on Amazon.

We should probably have a cliff notes version for our thread because 70+ pages is like a novel :P

I used a recumbent bike because the upright bike was too much hip flexor use after my psoas tenotomy.   And my PT uses recumbent almost exclusively...  But either way, having access to a bike is definitely worth it.

Sigh. It's a tear. Again. He doesn't know if it's part of the old tear or a new tear. Won't know until he goes back in. On one hand, I feel validated knowing that my pain was real. On the other hand I know exactly how long the recovery process is. He is hoping that he can just go in and debride the part that is torn and call it good but there is a chance that he will have to graft a tendon in place (with my luck that is what will have to happen).

Crap.    I'm so sorry.  Did he say why this happened??

              Running is dumb.

I would feel more comfortable going in for surgery if I knew why it happened.   Do you have dysplasia?  A version issue?   These will not be fixed with another labrum repair....

He said that most likely the original repair did not heal correctly. He removed the CAM impingement and there is no pincer impingement. He also said that it's possible that some sort of trauma retore it. A dog bit me back in October (big ass German Shepherd) and he really wrenched my hip when he lunged at me, so that may be the cause. I have no dysplasia or retroversion.

Did you have your surgery with Lawler in Novato? I have seen three different hip docs in CA and all say something different. I did see Sampson in San Francisco who does bilateral which  I would prefer.  So frustrated!

                      Yes, Dr. Lawler in Novato.

Sampson doesn't take insurance (from what I heard, anyway). If he did, doubtful he would take mine (SutterSelect).

I wish there was more of a standard between surgeons. It seems so different for everyone. It's really frustrating. Why do some surgeons suggest NWB and some WBAT? Why do some do PT immediately and some wait?

Hey! Now that I'm caught up on all the pages I thought I would introduce myself Smile

I had a labral repair and osteoplasty 2/16 (so just a couple days ago!) My surgeon starts PT the day after so I've completed my first PT and have a command center set up in my living room. Smile

A little background, if you're interested.. I ran my first full Oct 2014 and after than have battled on and off with knee pain, which limits me to 3-5 miles when it's bad. I traveled the world for 2015 (The World Race, 11 countries, 11 months) and month 8 started having hip pain near the time my knees would start to hurt. Fast forward just a few months and I couldn't run more than 1/4 of a mile, sleeping was troublesome and long car rides could get annoying. I started PT which didn't help, almost made it more aggravated.

I had my MRI, scheduled with the specialist, and got a spot from a cancellation within a week, so it was a quick process! For my surgery I had a nerve block and a spinal which, I think is the best way to go... you wake up pain free compared to general..

So two days out, feeling okay... pretty slow moving, but the pain meds, lazy-boy, and netflix seems to be someone keeping away the boredom!

Also, I got donjoy crutches... and they're pretty great compared to normal crutches, if anyone's interested!

My other/unfixed hip has had a run of almost painfree existence recently until today.  Stabbing pain in the groin for no apparent reason.   Usually only hurts after I run but even then not even this bad.   Wahhhh.  Sad

The worst pain that I've been dealing with is back pain! My hip doesn't hurt too bad... but man, my back can never seem to find a comfortable position!
