| Is Running Good for the Heart, or Not? (Read 1258 times) |

Running helps way more than it hurts. As long as you don't have a pre-existing cardiac condition, you are much better off exercising than not. Hefty, by citing famous runners who have died of or had serious cardiac issues and wondering whether running us bad for you, you're falling into the trap of focusing on the exceptions rather than the rule.
It's like the person we've all heard who says something like "Uncle Fred drank scotch and smoked a pack of cigarettes every day of his life and lived to be 100." The implication is that Uncle Fred lived to exceptional old age with that lifestyle, therefore that lifestyle is safe or promotes longevity or some other malarky.
Rather than think about a few famous runners who had heart issues, you must instead consider the millions of people who have much healthier, happier, longer lives due to running. And then consider the many many millions more sedentary folks whose lives will be cut short by their unhealthy choices.
Assuming no pre-exisiting condtions, it's pretty clear where the better odds lie. Exercise isn't a gamble with your life - not exercising is the gamble. |

| Quote from Scout7 on 4/17/2008 at 11:29 AM: In your initial post, I would say this:
"So, I've been doing some research online, and I've come across some articles that I thought were interesting. It seems that, according to some, running is not really good for the heart. Does anyone know if this is true? I mean, there's been a number of big-named runners who have died of heart-related problems. I'm just concerned how my training is affecting my health. Thanks!"
The day I see Scout actually post something like this, I think I will die from running, I mean laughing.

Quote from Hefty on 4/17/2008 at 5:18 AM:I can't learn from the experienced runners if I don't ask questions. At the time, I was brow-beaten by the angry mob, so I made a pseudo promise of not posting for awhile. I will now check my Bill Clinton evasive-discussions manual. Ah the tried and true troll defensive maneuver; feign surprise at being "persecuted" by the angry mob.
This is good stuff right here.
Carry on.

Yeah really. Scout would really say something more like this:
"So, I've been looking at pictures of your mom online, and I've come across some that I thought were disturbing. It seems that, according to some, having sex with your mom is not really good for the heart. Does anyone know if this is true? I mean, there's been a number of big-named politicians who have died of sex-with-your-mom-related problems. I'm just concerned how having sex with your mom is affecting my health. Thanks!" |

You guys aren't giving Hefty enough credit. He rarely gives his opinion, includes links to wikipedia, includes cut/pastes to support most of his arguments, lobs a well-timed Bill Clinton bomb, has lost 48 pounds since last Christmas, gives the board some Eddie Hascall (sp?) compliments, and keeps the thread going for five pages and counting.
That takes skill. Seriously. We should all pause to appreciate it.
And Dragon & Jeffgoblue, I don't think you guys have changed your avatars in a few days. You're both slipping. |

I concur whole-heartedly. And I've been giggling all morning that he got Scout to give him a serious answer. What a sucker. Just like his mom.
That Hefty is a troll is a little beyond obvious. That we'd be best not to feed him is equally obvious. The only thing really interesting is the question of whether he/she/it is one of us playing games ... or not. (I've got my eye on Globule ... and Trent ) .... Or whether he/she/it is a runner of any flavor.
But unlike some of the lamer efforts at trolling ... Hefty is funny. Entertaining even. I do appreciate the skill involved. And the free chuckles.
I'll refrain from more troll feeding in the future (mostly), but I'm sure I'll continue to be amused.
Let the mythic quest for the seven-minute mile continue, O Hefty One. Assuming your heart doesn't explode in your chest, of course. Which, as everyone knows, is one of the major risks associated with running.
Try garlic pills. They may help with that. |

I have been taking the advice of many people here. Figbash also gave me some excellent advice about squats. I have incorperated deep knee bends into the training routine as a result - hopefully a form of anaerobic work that will also build VO2max. The heart and lungs gets a pretty good workout, similarly to running up-hill
I will build up to continuous deep knee bending[squats without weights] for an hour at a time and see if it helps boost speed, stamina, and endurance.
