What is the ("Bleep")iest thing you have had happen while running? (Read 393 times)

Feeling the growl again

Two punks doing a drive-by on me with a paintball gun; missed my left eye by about an inch.

They were dumb enough to make a second pass; they seemed pretty upset about the resulting crack in their aunt's windshield.  Unfortunately the police did not want to do anything and I was too wrapped up in other matters at the time to file a complaint with their bosses about the lying etc.

I've had more than one vehicle take intentional passes at me.

    Boston Strong in 2014!

I've had a near miss with a car making a left turn while I was running through the intersection (I had the green light), but the scariest was encountering a mean, nasty, barking dog in a rural area with (apparently) no "leash laws."  My husband and I slowed down and walked VERY carefully away and fortunately, the dog didn't find us very interesting after a while. Another time, in another state, we were chased by a big, nasty, barking dog while on a bike ride; we out-pedaled that dog, but I don't think we could have out-run the other one.

        A Saucy Wench

scared by skunks...although fortunately I have avoided being sprayed so far.  knock wood.  Skunks are probably the scariest wildlife we have around here but we have a LOT of them.   - Of course there was the run a couple years ago where the skunks were blocking the trail so I was going across the ditch to go around them on the highway and I found $10.  That was nice

I've been almost hit by cars several times, fortunately I am pretty paranoid and dont trust that they have seen me ever.  I've been flipped off by drivers for crossing in the crosswalk, but at least I know they saw me.  Including the woman just 2 days ago who barely stopped even though we were well into the well marked crosswalk before she approached the intersection.  And then rolled down the window to scream at us that she didnt stop because she had right of way.

And then there was the new years run this year.  12:15 am running with 4 other gal pals and some drunken college kids chased us down to flirt with us, only to realize in ill disguised horror that we were their mother's age and just as quickly run away.

A few random dog interactions but fortunately all more annoying than threatening.  Although I too have been approached by the off leash dogs jumping on me and the "don't worry they are friendly!!!" idiot owner.  I always reply  "Well, I am not friendly"

I've only had really scary stuff on bikes.  dh and I were out riding and a pickup truck came by, turned around came straight at us forcing us into the ditch, turned around and was coming back straight at us with tires heading off into the ditch.  dh had an ancient steel schwinn circa 1973.  (he's a much better rider, this puts us on more even ground).  He picked it up and hurled it at the trucks windshield.  I pretended to be calling 911 on what was really my bicycle headlight, not a cellphone.  Bike bounced off their shattered windshield completely unharmed and they drove off.

dh has been shot at while riding his bike.

I almost get hit in the crosswalk about every week or every other week.

Once a dog started chasing me so I jumped and turned around really quickly, put my arms up, and screamed.  The dog whimpered and put its tail between its legs and scampered off.

A couple weeks ago there was a pit bull chained to a cinder block in someone's front yard.  But the cinder block wasn't attached to the ground... so the dog was chasing me just with an anchor slowing it down.  Got away and told the owner later to get his dog under control.

I am not built like a runner at all... I am kind of like an offensive lineman running down the street.  So a lot of times I get the pointing and laughing from our city's youth as they sit there smoking or something.  That cracks me up.

            I've got a fever...

              This:

Ok, this one is like the worst case scenario. This happened when I was in high school. I was out running right near my home (against traffic on the left hand-side of the road). A car went by with two shirtless "burnout" looking dudes (we called 'em burnouts back in the 80's. Really, they were rednecks). As the car passed me, dude in the passenger seat pitched his lit cigarette out the window and it hit me. It was clearly not an accident. Once I figured out what had happened, I turned around and started flipping them off and cursing. They were about a block past me at this point. they must have seen/heard me because the next I saw was brakelights and them squealing to a stop. And then driving back down the street fast in reverse. Shocked They were chasing me down! I took off running. I started cutting through yards, and I saw the car several more times, as they drove around the neighborhood looking for me. I was really close to home, but I didn't want them to see where I lived so I just worked my way through yards and side streets until I could approach my house safely and stealthily. I didn't get a good look at them or their plates, but I since I was a really skinny runner dude there were two of them I didn't want to take my chances. And I knew I could outrun them. Yes I have a term for them. Sounds a little like "blockers" except that it starts with an 'F' and the vowel is a 'u.' >Sad

On your deathbed, you won't wish that you'd spent more time at the office.  But you will wish that you'd spent more time running.  Because if you had, you wouldn't be on your deathbed.

Y'all have some great stories here :-)

Been stalked by a strange dude in a truck.

---  Funny, I have been stalked a couple times when running after work almost dark, by dudes in trucks.  Only one thing that confuses me though that makes it even more odd... I'm a dude!

---  And someone else talked about getting retribution when you see a car parked that you are 100% certain was the same vehicle from which someone threw or yelled at you...  I am not a guy who holds grudges, and I have never done this, but I at least get thoughts of throwing a little bit of sugar in the gas tank as payback... (Again, I let things go, I have never done this!... But since I have not much else to think about on the remainder of my run, sometimes those kinds of thoughts do cross my mind...)  Evil   And I am not talking about the folks that "oops" didn't see you and almost get you, I am talking about the folks that deliberately do crap that is very dangerous, like throwing bottles, etc.

Also keep in mmind as was in my case........the actual owner of the car may not have been the one driving and may

know nothing about the incident..............I still wish I knew if that cop chewed out his kid for acting like a little ass.....

                    This:

                    You mean this guy?

Oh wait you said it was a U not an O

Wow, some wild stuff going on.......worst that happened to me was being attacked by a Canada Goose when I ran to close to its babies. Man that bird was big!

I saw a a runner run over a car (hood to trunk) during the Philly Half a few years ago. The owner had parked it in a no parking zone and it was during a congested part of the race.

Big grin I had sort of the same...

....carload of older teen-aged boys driving slowly up behind me, while I was running, roll down their window and say 'Hi" only to speed away when they realized I was not some sweet young thang, but an old  Mama.

was the same car. Funny part came a few days later. Older dude comes in to transfer that vehicle into his

name. I ask him if he has teen boys.....he say's no I'm buying this car from a friend who is a cop, he as a

told me when he went back to get the car he was going to tell the Father the whole story.........sometimes
