We have a guy on the fire department I serve on that had a heart transplant 10 years ago. He's been on the department for like 40 years. He just broke his ankle on an icy drive though this past week. Sad

I, too, am inspired by your determination Peach. Big grin

You ain't kiddin'! I don't even remember what 70º feels like, just that I like it. Wink

I've always felt like if I had a transplanted organ that I'd feel so fragile...afraid to do anything to hurt myself or my "gift." It amazes me that you transplant recipients are out there and keeping yourselves so strong and healthy. You set good examples for the rest of us who have been lucky to not need new organs--but should we ever be in that spot, we see folks who have BTDT and not let it slow them down. Big grin

Peach - great thread!

Mr Inertia - I'm in Columbus and can second your recommendation of the awesome Lifeline of Ohio Half! I've run it the past three years and I love the course, the organization, and most of all the incredible volunteers.

Do heart valves count? in 2003 when my aortic valve crapped out, my pulmonary valve was removed and used to replace my aortic valve. A donor valve was used to replace my pulmonary valve. It is called a Ross procedure.

I'm heading down that path myself. Found out recently (January) that I have a problem with my aortic valve and moderate regurgitation. Also, it's impacting my mitral valve. My left ventrical is also enlarged. I don't have symptoms yet so they're not pushing surgery.

No weight lifting or other activities that will put a sudden strain on my heart.

I've been told I can continue to run my normal weekly running miles. However, I've been told to forget about marathons. Did you get the same advice prior to surgery?

Great subject! And one that's near and dear to my heart. One of the guys I train for my half marathons with had a lung transplant a couple of years ago. Smile And my cousin's son had a heart transplant when he was in high school. He participated in the Transplant Games that were held in Louisville a year or two ago.

Back in the day when I was in management with our BMV, I was one of the representatives that worked with IOPO (Indiana Organ Procurement Organization). I met a lot of great people and learned a lot about the process. When I developed my cardiomyopathy, transplant was a possibility there for awhile but luckily, my heart got better on it's own. Smile

csmithnj - back when I had my surgery, you didnt really hear about recipients doing too much running, let alone doing marathons. When I was thinking of signing up for it, I was scared and looking for a good excuse to get out of it..as in get my mind off it. I called my transplant center thinking they would hear it and say no. She laughed at me and said girl your 15 years out and doing great, I have no medical reason to stop you and then demanded I do it!

Hey Peach...good for you!! My sister is a multiple transplant recipient...lungs (twice) and kidney as a complication from her anti-rejection meds. She still stays active, but not a big runner.

Her second lung transplant was living donor from my older sister and I. So although I can't directly relate to your situation, I do remember what it was like trying to run again after that surgery.

Anyway, it's awesome you're out there!!!
