Forums > Racing > My Marathon Training Dilemma - Too late for another long run?
There are now only 4 weeks left for the Paris Marathon, for which I've been training since the end of December.
I did a long run yesterday - 34 km (~ 21.25 miles), even though I had originally planned to run 30-32 km only. But I was feeling great in the 30th km and decided that I would not waste the opportunity of running 34km or so. This will be my third maraton and the first time that I train for more than 31 km.
Today I'm feeling ok - not totally recovered but ok. However, I decided to review my schedule - which I should have done before my training yesterday and not after it... And I am now concerned with 2 things:
1. There are three Sundays before the marathon now. Maybe I should have left that 34 km run for the next weekend. If I do 30 km or more again this Sunday, it may be too much for my body to recover. I may even get injured.
2. But if I don't run again that much and run 25 km or less, it may be too early in the training schedule and I won't be fully prepared on the marathon day.
What do you guys recommend? How much should I train this Sunday? Feel free to look my training log. I uploaded the GPS data yesterday so it's up-to-date.
Thanks,
Bruno

I read your username as B Roethlisberger (an American football star who has found himself in a little bit of trouble recently).
I think you will be fine regardless, whether you are feeling good next weekend and run 30+km, or are not feeling recovered and run 25km. Either way, it isn't going to have much of an effect on your training. Since you've done 3 hour runs the last 2 weekends, I'd err on the side of caution and do a lighter run this weekend. Regardless, you have the long run time that you need.
The answer is dependant on you, your experience and the number of miles you normally run the years running etc.
It would appear that you are a faily low mileage runner. This means that to fully recover from runs 20+ miles it takes longer. I would rather see you do a medium distance run with a nice moderate speed workout - Save the hero workouts for the race.
Something @ 2 hours
Some choices -
* Run 1st hour easy - the second @ Marathon Pace
* Run 1st hour easy and then run 5x5 minutes harder with 5 minutes recovery (The 5 minutes harder should be a pace you could hold for 30 minutes)
* Run 90 minutes easy and tun 30 minutes harder
Basically a speed work out longer run

"If in doubt, do less."
My vote is "Don't". But you DO need to run more days in between. I would definitely encourage you to get out and run 5 or 6 days a week but shorter and easier from here on to get ready for the marathon. Looks like you've done PLENTY of long runs.
