I should add that I'm out. It's hard to run when there is pain in your foot.
Good luck everyone else.

Chris / Ivy, Any updates on your recent races? Hope all went well!

Sure. Chip time was 1:36:34. The report is buried back a page or two. I'm happy with the time and meeting my goal but, two weeks out, still trying to sort out what sort of factor going out so fast (22:00 first 5K), not warming up or stretching at all (excuse in report), and "holding it" for almost 10 miles played. I guess the only way to know is to run another, hopefully this spring. Right now I'm interested in seeing what my 5K looks like. It's been almost 4 months since my last.

Sorry meant Chris97z as I think he was up last weekend. If you could pull a 22:00 5k in route to 1:36 would say you have sub 20:00 (probably 19:30) in the bag.
Good job and good luck!

Yeah, I find myself answering to Chris often. Problem is, there's lots of us!
Sub 20 seems out of my league right now. I'll be happy to see if I can go under 21 and take it from there. I find running a good 5K hard. I'd rather string a few together and think of them as splits.
Good luck to everyone running this weekend.

Really? You must be running your tempos awfully hard because it seems like you could go sub-20 right now. I can run a 5k at 6:30 pace but my tempos are usually over 7 minute pace. I save suicide pace for race day.
If you wanted to sharpen up your speed you'd break 20 for sure. 1 month with 1 workout a week running 800 meter intervals or ladders or some other speed work and I bet you'll be running 19:30 - 19:50.
For someone not used to running a 5k I recommend you find someone who you know will run your goal time and keep them in close sight at mile 2. Then chase them like a rabid dog to mile 3 and then kick with anything you've got left. Mile 2 to the finish will hurt. The hurt means you're going to achieve your goal.
Really?
Thanks for *badgering* me. I really enjoy those hard tempo runs but I tend to avoid the red line, perhaps, too much. I might be psyching myself out. I just looked at my log and it appears I'm flogging the hell out of the treadmill lately so, since I'll be running anyway, I might as well add a couple speed workouts to the mix and see what happens. After all, it's been 4 months and 12 lbs lost since my last 5K.

I came up quite a bit short. I started out in the 7:45 range but quickly settled back to around the 8:00 min/miles. Little bit tired 9-12 but finished ok. Splits are in my log.
1:45:04 (5 minute PR gives me hope to shoot for the 1:40 in the Fall).
Good luck to the rest of you guys in your attempts.
looks like the weather is going to be terrible but fingers crossed that it won't have a massive negative impact.
I don't expect to actually have a shot at 1.40 till later in the year but will be doing a bit of a stocktake at:
Nelson Half - May 2nd
Christchurch Half - June 6th
then we'll see
Hope it goes well Alvyn....
the man put the gun away
Im planning on breaking 1:40 this year. Goal is actually 1:34:59. Current PR is 1:48:16.
Race is Capital City River Run on Sept 26.
Race Report Short version. 1:29:44

Here's my report:
Got there right about an hour before the scheduled start, got bib and warmed up. Turned on Garmin and battery was dead. Oh well, Timex still worked. Start was postponed about 12-13 minutes so more people could register and then the gun went off with no warning. strange since they had announced new start at 11:15 but gun went off around 11:13.
My splits are all from memory.
Mile 4 was slightly over 30 clock
Mile 8 was under 60 clock, high 58s I think
Nice course, great weather. Glad I brought the sunscreen. Easy course. The 2 hills weren't as bad as they looked on paper. Probably better to get that taller one over at mile 4. Last hill was pretty easy.
So chip came in at 11:37:44 with a gun time of 11:38:11. Pretty much lined up with what training was showing.
Nice to see you back again, Mandy!
Fantastic time, Big Joe! That really makes me jealous....just getting a minute or two off my time is going to be really tough, but you are 10 minutes under the target, well done! Look forward to more details.
Henry, congratulations, 1:37 is terrific! That is a late start to a race, mine seem to start at 8:00am usually. Did you pace with or race against anyone specifically? Anything you would do differently next time?
Simon.

The start was into the noon sun but after running in the cold for the last few months it was great to be in shorts and short sleeves again. The weather the last week was great for acclimating. I was lucky with the pacing with each mile marker starting at 2 having a digital clock. So I could pace with the gun time, my timex stopwatch and by feel. I'd have done nothing differently, except not try to beat the traffic home. The fish sandwiches smelt great but I had stuff to do at home.
Went through half way in 49.13 and through 10 miles in 1.15, so was on target until the 10 mile mark. Unfortunately the conditions on the day got to me, I also now think that my average weekly mileage was around 20-25 mile mark also wasn't probably enough for me seeing as I tanked after the 10 mile mark.
Still happy to have reached 1.40 with relatively little mileage. This is more than likely the last half I will run this year. Next step is a sub 20 5k and sub 40 10k.
