Shoe Retirement ? (Read 685 times)

dork.major dork.

What mileage do y'all usually retire your shoes at? Do you take into account which surface you've been running on, or other factors? My current pair of shoes is the first pair for which I've actually successfully logged all their miles, but I'm wondering what my cut off should be since there is a big difference between the recommendations I've heard 3-5 hundred. If it matters, I'm pretty lucky when it comes to biomechanics and knee/shin/foot issues. Knock on wood.

Reaching 1,243 in 2008 -- one day, one week, one mile at a time.

Good question and I'm curious about the answers, too. I retired my last pair at 350, and now have two pairs going at 250 and 20 miles. I'm wondering how long to keep the first going. Answers always seem to vary so much that they're not very helpful on this question Sad

I think it really varies...so many factors. I think stride length and pace play a major role, as some of us have found. I personally only get ~225-250 miles out of my shoes before my knees and shins start telling me it's time to retire a shoe. I'd love to get at least 300 miles and maybe someday I will as I get stronger and faster. k

And we liked it, by golly. There's probably another 30 threads on the topic, if you're really bored or have a serious shoe fetish. But the answers always going to be the same: it depends. On the shoes. The person. The foot. The terrain. The weather. And other stuff. That 300-500 seems about right for most folks. Except the wusses who change shoes every other week. Yeah, Zoom. You. Of course, I think they do it mainly for fashion reasons. New shoes are fabulous. I'm about to go out for a 7-miler with a pair that have almost 700 miles on them, and they're fine. Meanwhile, I have a pair with under 200 that are ready for the trash. Go figure. This is the third most common question. The first two involve Jessica Alba, and they really aren't appropriate here. Now I remember why I never leave the Swamp.

Jake, for someone from TN, you do a lot of races in my neighborhood. Literally, my neighborhood. What were you doing in the brentwood 5k? Smile

That theory might hold water if I didn't wear such dorky shoes. With the exception of my 902s (which I think I may actually get the most mileage out of, which is the reverse of what most people find), all of my NB shoes are stodgy lookin'. Tongue k
