I'll bet there are not many RA people that have been in Indonesia.
Maybe you will want to post to a peace corps group or something.
Maybe:

BTW - I think it is great that you will be going to see your daughter there. Hope you both have a great time!
Dh spent some time traveling through Indonesia when he was studying at University in Australia, but that was 20+ years ago so some of the info is probably outdated.
He traveled to Bali to surf Kuta Reef, Uluwatu, a tiny island called Nusa Lembongan, and several other areas. again, mostly to surf. August is their winter/monsoon season so it can be wet. Remember it's pretty third world, so wear shoes, and take first aid kit /antibiotic creme etc. you might need because you might not be able to find it there. The Monkey Temple near Uluwatu is really cool...the monkeys are everywhere. It's a huge Muslim population...I wanna say, like 90% muslim, so whatever that means. In the cities you can take buses or taxis.
I agree with Sluggo, I'm sure you could find some groups or more current information somewhere on the internet. Good luck and have fun!
Can't speak for Indonesia so much, but you will find Malaysia an excellent place with very good restaurants, hotels, infrastructure, transportation, and medical care should the unfortunate happen. The ATMs pay out Malaysian Ringgit. KL especially is multi-cultural and very used to Westerners, I am sure you will have an excellent time.
I've only been 3-4 times to Indonesia, and then only Jakarta. Indonesia is a bit more disorganised, rough and ready. Not dangerous by any means but perhaps not as clean as you might wish, lack of respect for traffic laws and generally just a bit frustrating.
I spent three weeks in Malaysia in 87--it was an awesome experience. We were in Kuala Lumpur, Petaling Jaya, and Selangor. We also visited a resort at Kuantan, and a weekend in Singapore.
It's easy to get around--most people can speak at least some English. What really struck me was that several people recognized my Texas accent.
New chapter forthcoming
Time for the relaunch. Stay tuned....
