On my long run today, I had a banana before heading out and carried another banana and about 2.5 L of water in a hydration pack. (Got a lot of funny looks when I was chomping on that banana at the halfway point.) In the future, I will carry something other than water, like Gatorade or whatever, in addition to the water since I ran out with about 2 miles left. Also for the electrolytes. Anyway, I am pretty good at keeping food down, and I would have brought PB and bread with me, but I ran out at home. The point of all this is what other kinds of *real* food (no powerbars, gu, blah blah) could I bring on a run for good fuel? I think my criteria are that it has to be reasonably solid food, packable, less perishable, carbs and/or protein, and less on the dairy probably.

Coconut water!!!!!!!!

I mix it with water and pomegrante juice.

It is great for electrolyte replacement.

Marathon: break 3:40
Half marathon: break 1:42

I usually have some dry roasted peanuts and some M&Ms in snack bags.  I used to carry jelly beans, but like the dark chocolate M&Ms better.

I wasn't sure if routes were made public or not. They all start and end from my apartment haha. I'm far too paranoid for all of that ....

As far as distances, in the summer I carry water on runs 8 miles and greater. For food I'm concerned about runs greater than about 10 miles (1.5 h). My longest runs these days are 17-20 miles of "hills." I'm slowly working toward 30 miles currently, and I'm pretty addicted to hill running. Forget flat, man.

Yeah, 15-30 miles you might want to consider calories on the run.  For that, it is really whatever you can stomach, generally with simple carbs as a major component.

1. Check the option "Private Map" on your courses.

2. Pretzels.

Aside from PBJ, I wouldn't really list any of this stuff as 'real' food! OK, maybe gummie bears. I wonder how portable baked chicken is.

In terms of the clif bars, I can stand some of them but they strangely become more nasty to me when I'm on a trail. I think that's backward. Maybe I oughta run with like smoked fish/chicken.

The only gel I've ever really been able to deal with is Hammer Gel and once AccelGel.

I like Little Debbies, specifically Oatmeal Cream Pies, when I'm out on the trails.  If I'm on a loop trail and I can stash a cooler, I like Watermelon.

I also take along Chocolate Hammer Gels, which I almost never use, but they're the only kind of gels that agree with me.  What I do break into frequently, especially now that it's warm, is Cliff Shot Bloks in Margarita flavor for electrolyte supplementation.  Yummy and I always come out of the woods craving Mexican food Smile

I like Hawaiian rolls, sometimes made into mini sandwhiches  with ham or turkey and swiss (no mayo or mustard, though).

Angel food cake.

Chocolate.

Gummy bears.
