Half marathon after missing nearly a month of training? (Read 622 times)

Hi all...Have been reading the forums for almost a year now and am pretty sure I know what the majority response will be to my question, but here goes...I really would like to enter the X-Country half in Tampa on November 20th. It's in a beautiful location and the weather should be really nice.  However, I missed almost an entire month of running (parts of September to October) due to the flu and antibiotics side effects.Dead  Have been slow in getting any miles since then, as my lungs seemed to have taken a beating...however, I do feel good now and would love to do that run in a couple of weeks. I have the chance to get in two ten milers on the next two Sundays.  Would I be crazy to do the X-Country? Has anyone else had a long stretch of time off and then come back and regretted/not regretted doing a race soon after?  Looking forward to hearing your thoughts and stories! Thanks!Smile

See no reason why you can't run it, assuming you were in good shape before getting sick. If you're shooting for a fast time maybe scale your ambitions back a little and just focus on getting a solid run in that you can build on.

I missed July & August this summer with injuries, then ran a half in Vermont in early September. I didn't worry about racing it, just focused on getting a good long run in and enjoying the day. As it turned out that race was a building block for Philly, where I will run the marathon in 3 weeks.

Thanks Hawk...yes, I was logging lots of (slow) miles before getting sick, and had no intentions of 'racing' even before that, just enjoying the scenery and maybe improving a bit on my 2:12 from my first half (Disney) in January (which I did with only 9 weeks of training, having been persuaded by my SIL to enter...we had a great time). Congrats on your Sep. half and good luck @ Philly!

Go for it! Enjoy the experience. You obviously won't race your best. You also need to be careful and start conservative and be smart about pacing and expectations. Have fun!

Dont cram in any last minute workouts.   They will be counter productive at his point.  I'd rather not do a 10 mile run the week before a half, maybe one over the next 7 days.  See if you can get in a 9 -10easy miles (or 100 minutes max whichever comes first ) this weekend, with walks thrown in if needed.  If you can finish that reasonably well, and recover in a couple of days then you are in good shape.  If that beats you up a lot, then maybe reassess.

thanks Tchuck for your advice about pacing and to Happyfeet regarding this week's longer run...looking forward to a ten, hope it goes well, sent in my entry this morning!
