My wife went running with me for the first time today. I'm on week 6 of C25K program. She did rather well from never running on the road before as she's only ever runs on the treadmill. She was complaining that running outside out on the road gave her an ear ache. I told her it was just the air blowing in one side and out the other side of her blonde head. She did not enjoy my sense of "humor' and now I have a brusied rib
Anyway- does anyone have an experience of getting ear aches while running and what can be a possible solution this this problem?
(I don't dare say the blonde thing again) |

I have actually experienced ear pain when I start to run more.
When I first started running, the diagnosis was actually TMJ - I was clenching my teeth when I would be taxing myself while running (beginning runners tend to run a bit too hard at times) which made the jaw muscles sore which in turn created sensitivity to the openings of the Eustachian tubes.
The past few years there is just some irritation in the Eustachian tubes. I've been to the ENT each year (it usually hits in the Nov/Dec timeframe) to confirm it is not an infection. Each year I'm prescribed prednisone at the beginning to deal with the symptoms and decrease the pain, and also a nasal steroid to help build up the sinuses. The steroid I'm using now - Veramyst - seems to be working quite well.
I hope this helps! |

It's hard to tell from one experience running outside. She could try the treadmill again and then outside to confirm there is a pattern. Could be that she developed an ear infection. Who knows.
