being prompted to log in even though I've recently used the site (Read 836 times)

I always check the 'remember me' option when I log in, and it works as advertised... for about two weeks.  Then I am prompted to log in again, despite the fact that I just used the site a day or two ago.

For instance, the last run I logged prior to today was on Tuesday.  When I logged that run, my identity had been remembered by the site (yay for cookies), so I didn't have to log in.  Then, when I went to log today's run (a Thursday), I was prompted to log in, despite using the same computer, browser, account, etc.  From what I saw on a previous thread in the archives, I shouldn't have to log in again as long as I've logged in sometime in the past 30 days.

I have noticed this behavior for a long time (probably a few years), just getting around to posting about it now.  Has anyone else seen this?

    I'm running FF7 on Windows XP SP3.

Without keeping detailed records of how often I need to log in, it'd be tough to reproduce.  I guess I can do that if needed.

    Thanks Eric!

Maybe your son is deleting your cookies after he spends the afternoon looking at porn.  You know, after he has his nap - damn he's cute (assuming that is your son on your shoulders in your avatar).

No, I have never noticed this problem and I rarely reboot my computer. (I put it to sleep.) Whenever I do reboot, I do need to become "remembered" again but this is expected behavior.

This happens to me too.  I just assumed it had to do with Sideways Smile updating the site.  Never really been a big deal to me.

Why is this expected behavior?  Shouldn't the authentication cookie still be saved by the browser, even across reboots?

For me...the logged in status flag (in the cookie, I assume) seems to expire about every 30 days.  [regardless of browser and/or OS type and version]

Exactly.  This seems to be undesirable behavior.  I would rather that the cookie is refreshed whenever I visit the site, and only expires after I haven't visited in 2-4 weeks.  It seems really odd that the site will not prompt me to log in one day, and then will prompt the next.

I don't know if this was Eric's intended behavior.  I know that I saw a reference to the 30-day cookie lifetime in a topic from 2006 when I was searching the archives regarding this issue.  It just seems that it should be that I have to log in if I haven't used the site in 30 days, rather than every 30 days.

This is particularly annoying when I access the site from multiple computers (1-2 at work, 1 at home).  As a result, I'm asked to log in more like once a week (between all the machines).

From what I can tell by looking at the cookies that are set at login time, there is definitely a 30-day expiration.

I have my browser configured ti remove all cookies when it closes. I guess I should have mentioned that...

The cookie is set to expire after 30 days.  If you tinkered with the privacy settings in FF, you may have set FF to delete all cookies when you exit FF.  I set FF to only allow cookies from certain sites.  If a site is not on this list, the cookie is allowed as long as FF is running.  You should check to make sure FF allows RA to set its cookies.

Your session info should carry over from server restarts.  If you have to relogin, I'm guessing it's a browser setting problem.

I haven't changed any of the settings re: cookies in Firefox.  The cookie persists properly across browser sessions.

My question is, should I get a new cookie each time I visit the site?  Or am I supposed to have to log in once every 30 days (on each computer)?  Because the 'once every 30 days' gets annoying when I use multiple computers, as it averages out to logging in more like once a week, despite the fact that I'm on the site all the time.

                            Thanks for the clarification, Eric.

Josh...I'm certain you can understand that your situation not common  -- using enough separate PCs/devices that the cookie expiration on each device means you're going through the authentication routine enough that it is a hassle. Personally, I use home pc, work pc, travel pc and smartphone (and wife's iPad every now and then) and seldom notice the re-authentication.

It's possible to edit the RunningLog cookie to change the expiration date to be greater than 30 days.
