Yet another "marathon" measurement: China's first vertical marathon

    Feeling the growl again

Winner of the last one took <11 minutes...the only time I considered 11 minutes to be on par with a marathon was when I was being forced to watch Twighlight.

That's even faster than one of those 5k marathons.

Although I still would not want to do it.

Stair climbs are hard. I did the Hustle up the Hancock about 4 years ago and it's not something I'd care to do again.

What is it about stairs?  Even at my best aerobic fitness ever a flight or two of stairs could leave me severely winded.  I don't seem to be alone in this, either.

And you'd think it would be more like pedaling than like running.

I did the Empire State Building race a few times.  It's not running at all, not even close.  People start running for a few flights, but then it's more arm power pulling yourself up and around by the railings, taking two or so stairs at a time... in fast walk.

Took me a dozen or so minutes (can't recall).  It was hard to breathe and the stairwell was dusty and mildewy, but it was nothing at all like a marathon. Still fun though, once or twice.  I did get a cool medal.

I used to live on a 5th floor walk up.  I'd get winded even though I did the trip up and down a few times a day.  I'd get to the top gasping, but could race a 60k.  There IS something about stairs, and that something sucks.
