PSA: Random words turned into spam hyperlinks (Read 278 times)

kcam

I noticed the other day that in some posts on RA random words would be displayed as hyperlinks (as though the poster wanted you to click on that link for further info).  But the links would always be a 'mouseover' that showed some coupon or advertisement.  I was a little bummed as I thought that Eric had put this into the system for revenue so didn't really worry to much about it.  But I noticed that I only saw these random spam links at home and not on my laptop or work computer.  Turns out that there was a Chrome browser extension installed called 'Coupon Companion' that was the culprit.  Removed it from Chrome and no more random, annoying mouseover links.  I have no idea how it got there (and don't tell me to stop hitting up the porn sites cuz I ain't gonna Smile ) but this is just an FYI in case anyone else sees the same behavior.

    As you were ...

That's not nice of chrome to do that.  You got that little piece of adware from an ad (dunno if you clicked on it or not) that stealthily downloaded that for you.  It would be nice to figure out which ad this is.  I have been trying for a couple weeks now to track down another ad issue I found.  I will look for this one too.

I'm betting that chrome has a way to block extensions or inform you about downloads.  I'll play with chrome on my machine and see if I can figure that out too.

You are the second person I recall that has posted about this bad boy in the past month or so.

(random chrome bitching: I have an android phone.  And it won't run chrome.  Whaaaaaa?  It tells me that I don't have the right version of the android OS... even though my phone assures me that I have the latest version.)

From what I know, latest phone OS != latest OS. For example, if you still own the original Droid1, the latest OS you can get pushed onto that phone will still be the ancient version, not the latest and greatest. The latest OS version you can get for a particular phone is specific to that phone model.

Si, although my phone is only a year old, that makes sense.  But it seems like the googs would then offer up version-specific chromes.  And I know other people with android phones happily running chrome.  Perhaps I selected...poorly... when I got my VZ Samsung Charge.  Anyway, it's weird to me that my google phone refuses to run the google browser.

I suspect if I was more motivated, I could use the internet to find an older version of chrome out there somewhere.  A project for another day.

Although firefox on my phone barely runs RA.   My phone is like my garmin.  spooky and weird.  I am a technology menace.

          Mmmmm...beer

Had the same thing happen recently with Firefox, adware sucks.

I bought a Google Nexus 10 tablet and I don't run Chrome on that even!  Not a fan of Chrome.  I just need to migrate my bookmarks over to FF to be rid of it completely.

Chrome came out in Feb 2012 for ice cream sandwich (android 4) , you can google around and see if a phone is slated for an update for ice cream sandwich or jelly bean.
