When I first setup my Garmin watch, it set my Max HR to 185 after asking my age and gender.
Well, last night while doing some hill repeats I maxed out at 195 (with most of the repeats hitting over 190).
Does this mean that I should update that setting to 195? I am starting to pay a little some attention to heart rate zones in my training so I want it to be reasonably accurate.
So long as you think it was accurate and repeatable, yes. Personally I'd add 2 or 3 too.
Do what you want, just how you like. Nobody has to know.
If you want it to be accurate, do not use a formula. You need to conduct a field test to determine your zones.
From my understanding, Max HR is not the most effective metric to use for determining training zones. You are better off using Lactate Threshold.
