Anyone else get great ideas during a run?

I didn't invent anything today, I just thought of a good (geeky) dog name as I passed a lady with a German Shepard. I'd really like to get one as well and run with him.

And I'll name him...

Mahler.

For those that don't know, Mahler is the name of a very famous, very... fantastic... composer. One of my absolute favorites.

The best part is that I can say... "Come here, Mahler," and people with think it's "Come here, mauler," in which case, no one will mess with my and my snarling, mauling, beast!

Needless to say, this amused me over the course of most of my run.

Big grin

It's late, I apologize if this is only amusing to me.

Oh man, now I'm worried. I have in-run thoughts even when I'm not running. What does that mean!?!?! Big grin

Love it.

The other day I decided I wanted to open a furniture store named the Ottoman Empire. While running.

I thought Mahler was a conducter. (Or at least thats what his contemporaries thought!)

Yep, yep. He conducted the Vienna Opera for some time but made some enemies there. Although raised Catholic, he was born into a Jewish family. Jews were not allowed to occupy such positions.

He eventually resigned and conducted the New York Met. Opera and the New York Philharmonic for a short time before he died.

(Rick) Mahler was also a junk ball pitcher for the Atlanta Braves in the early/mid 80s.

My first Mahler hearing was the recording of Joe Alessi playing that very solo. "The voice of God" solo.

Mahler 3 is the shit. That trombone solo. The opening horn theme. Oh man.

I'm going to NY to see the NY Phil play Mahler 5 in January.

This guy is conducting.

This is the recording I have:

Admittedly, this was during a phase when I seemed to only buy recordings by a) the NYPO b/c of Alessi and David Finlayson and b) the Chicago Symphony because of, well, you know.

I feel like I sort of know Alessi indirectly. I dated a girl in undergrad who went on to study under Alessi. At the time, she didn't have a lot of kind words to say about him ("prick" seemed to be the word she used most often), but I imagine it was one of those character-building experiences that paid off, b/c she went on to join one of the military bands (Army or Navy, can't remember which).
