Stand up (Read 1362 times)

We've Got Big Hills

I'm running somewhere tomorrow. It's going to be beautiful. I can't wait.

    Poor baby

Sitting sucks! Sitting can also shorten your hip flexors and hamstring flexibility causing hammy issues and low back issues. Not great for runners!  I wish I could drive a car without sitting. After being in fitness industry for 13 years and on my feet most of the day, the sales job the last 7 years and in the car 45,000 miles a year and office work when not in car has been a struggle. I think I am winning but it requires a lot of damn maintenance

      Prince of Fatness

Sitting in the car is worse because you can fidget around even less, especially if you are driving.  I've been dealing with piriformis / hamstring tightness since September.  In November I raced two half marathons and right after that sat a combined 9 hours in the car.  That could not have helped.  I spend two hours in the car traveling to and from work, and sit at a desk all day at work.

I've been trying to get up and do some light stretching every hour or so while at work.  That seems to be helping.

There is a long dark road ahead of me.

        lace 'em up!

Ironic that you link to this. I've been having a real hard time staying awake while reading boring and poorly written requirements documents at work. Yesterday, I discovered I could concentrate better and stay awake better if I stood up while reading.  The documents are still boring and poorly written, but that's a different problem.

          Thanks for posting Trent.

I assume that reading boring and poorly written posts here doesn't help either.

The tangents are moot. Set the bar low. Crawl under it.

It does... but mainly because there's enough humor scattered about to keep me coming back for a few laughs.

                Excellent!

I use an exercise ball as my desk chair at work. Sometimes I balance; sometimes I bounce; sometimes I roll under my desk to stretch or do some ab work.

And, the project of the week is to convert my home desk to a standing desk - if nothing else, it might discourage me from spending too much time online.

I've been trying to think of a way I could build a platform for my treadmill for a laptop.  Something easily removable so I can still run on the TM.  But as much time as I waste on here I could easily knock off 10000 steps.

                  I look my best blurry!

Back when I had a desk and a paying job, I didn't spend that much time sitting.  I was a pediatric PT.  When I did have to sit and write up evaluations and reports I would often sit on an exercise ball.  I was bouncing, rocking and rolling the whole time.  It drove one of my colleagues nuts but I loved it.  I never even thought to use it during my computer time at home.  That is a thought.  It just wouldn't match my pretty office furniture.  Hmmm...

A guy in my town did that... there was in article in the local paper about it.  I'll try to find it.

OK he is waaaay fancier than I would get.  I'm thinking plywood.   I think a simple box design would work, the bars on the treadmill could provide enough structure since I plan on removing it for actual running.

Of course maybe I should just start with watching my TV shows on the TM and see how that goes before I try typing.

Well that was freaking easy.  I decided since I have been thinking about this for ages I should at least get off my keester and take some measurements and well I should find a board just to get an idea and ...hmmmm what do I have...

It fits PERFECTLY, doesnt wiggle at all and has a nice non slip surface.  (Yes that is THE STEP circa 1993)

THIS IS AWESOME.  Right now I am borrowing dh's laptop for this, long term I would need something else.  Only thing  I would change is get a mouse for his laptop.  If I was using this for work and not internet crap I would want a slightly higher monitor and a real keyboard.    Seriously considering a wall mount monitor on a splitter and a usb keyboard and mouse to run across the room to my desktop.
