Dd will be graduating this year, and this is all new to me.
Do I send an announcement to friends of ours who also have kids graduating, or would that be rude, considering they are incurring the same expenses we are? I don't want them to think they need to buy a gift for her, and I certainly can't afford to buy each of her friends a gift if we get announcements for them all.
Also, dd's graduating class is big--each graduate is given a certain number of tickets for the actual ceremony. It is broadcast on a local TV station for those who can't attend. How do we go about sending announcements to family and friends and telling them they can't even go?
We are having a come and go party for her the afternoon after she graduates Saturday morning. Is it okay to put the party invitation in the same envelope as the announcement? We're already looking at a LOT of postage--I can't imagine having to double it!
Announcements aren't necessarily the same as invitations. If you receive an invitation, you should send a gift (same rule as for weddings). You do not need to send a gift if you receive a graduation announcement.

I don't think anyone will mind if you slip the party invitation in with the announcement.

What is she graduating from? This intrigues me. We graduate from university here, but usually only immediate family would attend the ceremony and I've never heard of someone sending invitations and getting presents....We go to school and then on our last day we go home, never to return.
New Zealanders are such a sensible people. Really.
Except for all that bungee jumping, jet boating, rolling down hills inside plastic balls, climbing Mt Everest, naked airline adverts, and abdicating every hill to sheep...

I know from the US TV shows we get here that your kids graduate from High School too. This doesn't happen here either. We go to school and then on our last day we go home, never to return.
High School? I'm pretty sure they have middle school graduations, elementary school graduations, heck they probably have kindergarten graduations here in the good old US of A
I grew up in England and on our penultimate day of high school we were told to go home and not come back. The school was closed and locked the next day. And yes, this somewhat elementary ruse was used to fool troublemakers year after year.
There was no tradition of high school graduations (or proms for that matter). I wonder whether the times have changed given the globalization of American culture and traditions (thanks Hollywood...)

lace 'em up!
Yes, unfortunately, they do in some areas. Here, "every kid gets a trophy."

John, you clearly have no children. They have PRESCHOOL graduations. Apparently, I am the only curmudgeonly mother in the US who finds these an annoying and silly waste of time, who doesn't tear up, want to take multiple photos, and has trouble suppressing the urge to make sarcastic comments during the "ceremony." Such foolishness. My little kids are at an elementary school that only goes to 4th grade, when they will move to an 'upper elementary school' for 5&6, then middle school for 7&8, then high school. So I have to go through 8 more 'graduations' with the two little ones before they hit college.
Having said that, I really love college graduations. I paid a lot of money for my silly regalia and I just love wearing it every year. Of course, I'm in Virginia, where the parents are dressed up (suits and ties for dads, sunday best for mamas, hats all around) and everyone attends graduation. Not like laid back California where I hear people come in shorts and flip flops if they show up at all.

Yes and I still ask why.

you're not alone.
Don't get me started on "a trophy for every child." I was appalled to see the length of the middle school "Honor Roll" in our local newspaper. I know how many kids are in each class, so I could figure out that 66% of all the kids made either honor roll or high honor roll. Spare me! Then they wonder why they don't get into Harvard!

Carnation and orchid leis are really popular too.

Hah. You got me in one.
We do have a dog though. I'd totally forgotten that the obedience classes that we failed to attend (that's why we aren't parents - we are irresponsible) had a 'graduation' for the dogs. This was in the Bay Area so the quotient of 'whacky' is higher.
I wonder if it would be appropriate to send out announcements and expect gifts for a dog graduation. Scooter likes getting presents in the mail....

Hey now! I resemble that remark.
OK, so maybe we do like to graduate from just about everything around these parts. I think I'll send out invitations to the Marin Memorial Day 10K when I expect to 'graduate' from the Sub-38 10K thread. I'll expect gifts. John, since you're a perfessor of, like, college stuff you can be the distinguished guest and hand out the diplomas.
If I remember correctly my kids had a middle school graduation (which only my wife and I attended - no gifts), HS graduation (invited/attended by immediate family mostly), college grad (again invited/attended mostly by immediate family with gifts from parents and grandparents only). Pretty sure there was no k'garden grad - I would have remembered that abomination.
