More cost effective: running or driving? (Read 848 times)

Gig

I bought my car ten years ago, and I'm just about to hit 100K miles.

    I think I spent around $12,000. I average about $10/month in gas.

I figure around $100/yr maintenance plus $5K for lifetime major maintenance.

That puts me at $30K, which averages to 30 cents per mile.I think I'll be able to bleed out another 50K miles, though.

Averaging all my shoe costs per mile (going back to 2005), I'm at 24 cents per mile.

I did not include my current shoes, which I just bought last week (and am already at $2.65/mile). But I did include my VFFs, which I have used disappointingly little. I plan to improve upon that in 2012. Interestingly, other than the VFFs, I seem to get far greater value, and a lot more miles, out of less expensive shoes.

Wow.. $10 a month in gas?! I luckily have a company car, but even with my commute to work being free, my family spends easily $200-300 a month in gas. (Wife and one driving teen.)

          You forgot car insurance.

          For running I get 700 miles a pair, so at $90 per pair that's 13 cents/mile.

Of course, my treadmill cost $1000 and has ~4000 miles on it, so those miles cost an additional 25 cents each not including electricity.

I believe the Oatmeal Cream Pies I occasionally snack on at work are ~300cal...or ~3miles' worth of calories...if I fueled on them alone that's 17 cents/mile for food.

So running outside (shoes being the only clothing depreciated) 13+17 = 30 cents/mile

          On treadmill it's up to 55 cents/mile

2013 goals:  Kick some arse.  Moreso than 2012.

            $10/mo in gas is only 3.33 gallons at bargain basement $3/gal right now...at a high 40mpg that's 133 miles/mo or 1,598 mpy.

We were told 100K miles in 10 years or 10,000 mpy.

The math does not add up.

MTA:  If $100 was meant instead of $10 it's pretty close.

Whoa, $10/month in gas? How's that work?

Isn't time a factor in efficiency?

Janie, today I quit my job. And then I told my boss to go f*** himself, and then I blackmailed him for almost sixty thousand dollars. Pass the asparagus.
