It's not mine, of course, but was written by Robert Browning.

I stumbled on it by chance while on Wikipedia.

The name is Pheidippides and legend says he was the guy who invented the marathon

NOTE: The version of the legend/story on which Robert Browning based this poem is the one told by Herodotus, where Pheidippides was said to have run 2x 150mi from Sparta to Athens and back to warn the Athenians and ask them for help, hence the reference to "two days and two nights".

"If one can stick to the training throughout the many long years,
then will power is no longer a problem. It's raining? That doesn't matter.
I am tired? That's besides the point. It's simply that I just have to."

Well actually....I'm old enough to tell you the real story, as I was there that fateful day.

While it is well known and oft reported that Pheidippides used his last breath to exclaim "Victory Belongs to Rome (someone)!", as the crowd was cheering in jubilation of learning of our victory on the plains of Marathon...I leaned in to offer some water to our fallen brother, I clearly heard him mutter "..the course was long, my Garmin says 26.5.." as his last words.

Did an angel whisper in your ear and hold you close and take away your fear...In those long last moments

Why would a Greek exclaim that?

The Garmin data sounds authentic though.........

Ah, now I understand the "Imperial Units" option in my Garmin 210... they refer to the Roman Empire!!!

That's what happens when you buy second hand stuff :P
