Forums > Racing > 2010: Goal Sub 1:40 Half
This was a good thread in 2009 that seemed to Die out. Hopefully still some interest in this goal for 2010.
2009 Sub 1:40 Thread
My Primary Goal for Spring 2010 is to get Sub 1:40 in Half and gearing training on 5/16 goal race to hit 1:40. Going with a plan to scale back milage a bit from last years marathon cycles but adding more intensity.
Hopefully some of the old 1:40 crew / alumni can visit: If interested post your goal and dates/plan to get you there:
Good Luck
I'll hop in I guess. I have one shot and one shot only. In the first week of April there is a half marathon. If it is a wet sloppy mess of a course that could be a tough goal time for me. If it is a beautiful day and the course is dry I should be able to come in well under if my training is good enough.
I've never run a half marathon and may never run another. So this will be a make or break event I guess. It just happens that I am doing only long easy miles in Jan - Feb recovering from injury. And an early April half-marathon fits the schedule and budget (a whole $7).
I'm in.
The plan will be to do some long tempos and some hill work in March. Then after this one race I plan to be steadily moving in the shorter faster race direction.
2012 goal = 4:59 for 1,500 meters. (before then just get healthy)
Doug,
Glad to have you onboard. I really appreciated your input on the sub 20 thread, I will be interested to see your experience for your first half, as I think it will help you in the 5k in the long run.

I'm in!! (sub 1:40)
First try is March 06, Berry Half. I'm pretty out of shape now, so we'll see.
PR now is 1:40:50 from October '09.

This may be a bit optimistic for me, but is one of, if not my primary, 2010 Goals.
I'm hoping to find a relatively "easy" 1/2 in late spring.
I plan on running the Hands-on-House half again in the fall, but that is a tough course (unless it's only 12.6 miles again like last year due to last minute road construction).
So, I'm in!
"In order to love running, I have to hate it. There is no love in this without hate. You gotta love it so you want it so bad that you are pushing yourself to those limits to where you just simply hate it,and if you aint there to where you hate it,then good luck trying to love it."
Count me in. I'm planning on running a couple HM's this spring as I train for the a May marathon.
March 21 - Churchill's Half marathon in Toledo OH. Current PR 1:45:03 Goal: 1:35:00
Based on my 10 Miler in Nov., McMillan projects a 1:34:17 HM. So we'll see how that works out.
yes, i'm really that slow.

My PR is 1:45. Perhaps I am being over optimistic, but "he who dares, wins".
I play soccer once a week, which I deem as my speed work and will start adding some hills to the end of one of weekly easy runs.

it looks like it is April 10. (South Shore half marathon)

I'm in. I have a half in mid April. My PR is 1:45. Perhaps I am being over optimistic, but "he who dares, wins". I play soccer once a week, which I deem as my speed work and will start adding some hills to the end of one of weekly easy runs.
I looked at your log and it seems like your mileage before your last one was fairly low. I don't see you're being too ambitious to think you can train for a sub 1:40 fairly easily, because I don't think you're near your potential right now. My two cents
Beware, batbear...
2012 Goals:
1. 1500+ miles.
2. Streak starting in March or April if I'm healed.
3. 100 Push up challenge to get some upper body strength back.
4. Get weight under 180 by the end of the summer.
5. 1 or fewer alcoholic drinks 4+ nights per week every week.
6. Concentrate on 5K distance and September HM.
7. Have fun!

I look my best blurry!
That, 1:39:59, is my target for the Hyannis Half that I'll be running at the end of February (2/28/2010). It's going to be close. I've never officially "raced" a half though I'm no stranger to running the distance. I've passed the half mark in the upper 1:40s on longer runs. This Sunday I'm running the Boston Prep 16 miler partially in preparation for the half. I'm still trying to work out the pace I should target for the Boston Prep race. I'd like to go under 8 min per mile but don't know if that's too much to ask of myself on that hilly course. I usually get awkward reactions from non runners when I tell them I'm running a hilly 16 mile race in preparation for a mostly flat half marathon.
