2010: Goal Sub 1:40 Half (Read 2929 times)

Finally had 2 back to back good workouts.   One even on a treadmill!

January have been hitting the weights/cross training more and Monday starts the real deal training.  The change of pace has me feeling strong for the first time since Erie Marathon (Half) in early September.  For me to train hard I need to feel strong so although have a little extra bulk going into the cycle should be good by race day (Thinking of taking shot @ sub 1:40 in Toledo 4/24)

Found a plan online that looks like it will be challenging with 6 days a week with 3 hard workouts focusing on speedwork, but overall milage is managable.  Like any plan will use as a template and adjust as we go, but hoping this will also help PR signifigantly in 5K , 5 mile , 10k following May 16 target tace.

Ryan Hall as a plan out there for the full and half.  The half has a 5 day a week schedule.   it has a lot of speed and tempo work..  If i had a little more mileage under my belt, I would give it a try.  I am afraid I will breakdown.

By the way, my PR for the half is 1:41:35 and this will be my second race at this distance.

      Beware, batbear...

You know what, put me down.  I may not make it, but I'm not racing a half-marathon until the fall  anyway which gives me a lot of time to get ready.

The two races I'm looking at are the Asheville Citizen-Times half on September 18 which is an extremely hilly, tough course.  Then the Bethel Half Marathon on October 9 (or possibly the 16th).  They haven't published the date yet.  It's a small ordeal but it's a much easier course than the Asheville course.

        2012 Goals:

        1.  1100+ miles.

        2.  Streak starting in March or April if I'm healed.

        3.  100 Push up challenge to get some upper body strength back.

        4.  Get weight under 180 by the end of the summer.

        5.  1 or fewer alcoholic drinks 4+ nights per week every week.

        6.  Concentrate on 5K distance and September HM.

        7.  Have fun!

        Beware, batbear...

Someone pointed out to me that I ran a palindrome time in today's 10K - 52:25. Therefore, I'm going for all Palindrome PRs this year.  1:40:41 in the half - (I know it's not sub-1:40, but it's close) and 3:50:53 in the marathon (or if I run a really late marathon and feel strong, 3:30:33).

          2012 Goals:

          1.  1100+ miles.

          2.  Streak starting in March or April if I'm healed.

Notes - Training for CMM in April

I did the Boston Prep 16 today and hit the half split somewhere around 1:40:40 <<edit: 1:41:02 was my guntime>>. This was about 4 minutes faster than I had hoped. I targeted a 7:59 pace and finished with a 7:43 pace and was also about 4 minutes faster than i hoped. I'm glad I pushed myself and didn't treat it as a glorified training run. Considering this, I'm on target to go under 1:40 but don't want to take it for granted.

Today's conditions couldn't have been better. I didn't go crazy on the long hills and the last one seemed to go on for ever. I'm glad I practiced downhills. It was definitely got me a minute or two back! The organization, scenery, and atmosphere were all great which made the miles go by quickly. I'd do it again in a moment. Perhaps next time I'll try for 1:59:59!

              Getting Faster!!!

I ran my first half last week in 1:38:53 Aramco Houston Half Marathon. My plan was to start at 7:45 pace for 2 miles then run at 7:30 until mile 10 and kick it in if I had the energy. This was thrown out the window since I made my way to the start line a little late. I started in the second wave and was way in the back. I had to run around a lot of slow people. My average pace at mile 9 was 7:53. I picked up that last 4 miles and finished with 7:32 average. I could not believe how fast I ran the last 3 miles. My splits were 7:17, 6:55, 6:26, the last 1/4 mile was 5:52. Since I started in the back, I was passing people the whole time. All the tempo training paid off. I can't wait to run another half. I will start toward the front and finish with a better time.

I'm going to have a few challenges to this thing.

                  1.  I have never run any race longer than 5k so I have no idea what being too fast or too slow for a half marathon feels like.

                  2.  I have to stay healthy of course.

                  3.  I don't know what a half marathon pace would be like for me.  I just don't know how it should feel.

                  3.  I have never worn a watch during a race but I may have to this time.  The course will have mile markers and I suppose I should try and make use of those.

                  4.  They have gatorade at the halfway point.  and water every mile.  I'll have to see what I need to do but I will probably need to bring along some smarties or something to give me a little sugar on the last 3-4 miles.

Obviously some 5-7 mile tempos in the month before the race would tell me a lot.  I'm aiming for mid 70's for age graded results at things like a 1-mile race this year but I'm afraid it is more realistic for a fat guy to aim for low 60's in such a long race.  It's a huge drop off in quality.  But I guess that's why I don't run half marathons.

A garmin would cost me at least 10x the amount of money I ever intend to spend on marathons and half marathons... so buying a garmin is out.  If I use a watch it will be the $10 one I already have.  But of course those just confirm the past and don't help much for the future.  So maybe I should just run watch-less anyway and fly by the seat of my pants.  I don't know.

Yes, I agree with this.  I think all things being equal if you can hold a pace in a 5-7 mile tempo you can hold it for 13.1 in a race.  +10 seconds at worst.  At least that's my experience if you have nothing more to go on.  And if I were really going for a 1:40 time goal I wouldn't be able to do it be feel, at least the first time (I've only run 1:40 once).

mr train you are a pain, your words - they make me go insane

they strike my ever-thinking brain like little drops of acid rain

oh, to my life you are a bane; crazy, mixed up, mr train - r2e

that's my thinking.  assuming of course I have the endurance to back it up.  And I plan to be doing 40-45 miles a week again real soon.  I should be able to get in a few 50 mile weeks in before that race.

                      Prince of Fatness

Long tempos are what helped me get under 1:40 in 2008.  I was only running 5 days a week back then, about 40 miles or so.  I would do a 45 minute tempo midweek and about 1:45 - 2 hours on the weekend.  A lot of those weekend runs were fast finish.  Pretty simple but it worked.

                        I look my best blurry!

I'm coming away from a hip problem but I think I can do it!  My PR(actually my one and only) was last Oct 1:40:27.  I'll go for 1:39:59!  Pittsburgh Marathon May 2nd (if not sooner).

Not sooner.  Hip news isn't so good.  Maybe Toledo???  I'll know more Feb 8th.  Not too far from the "Burgh" for me.

Hey gang ... Sorry been absent last few weeks.  My Step Mom was in final stages of Lung Cancer and spent some time down it ATL visting and being there at the end.

She final came to peace last Tuesday but it was and has a very tough time since, as I am sure those have gone through the same experience, seeing someone you love go through the last struggles of life is one of the hardest things to witness, at least for me it has been.

With everything going on I have managed a whopping 1 day of 6 mile run last Thur for probably the last two weeks.  Eating too much fast food, driking too much, sleeping too little, I feel like I am a lot further behind than I should be.  May have to re-evaluate April Half goal @ Toledo and stick to May @ Cleveland.

Just got back Sun Night to a broken Furnace, Wife's car would not start, sick kids ... you know the whole when it rains it pours thing ... so still have not run.

Tommorow I am back at it ... No excuses.

Buckeye - Glad you're back.  Very sorry for your loss.  Hope running helps you heal.  Maybe see you at Toledo.

                              Me and pacer Blake

Buckeye, Very sorry to hear about your loss. Our family spent alot of time with my mother in her final slow 2 months of a 2 1/2 year battle with lung cancer this summer. She was a runner even into her diagnosis and treatment. I really began to run following her death. Running is a great release. But not a substitute for everything.

Hopefully life will get back on track soon.
