Gosh JakeKnight, I'm surprised you didn't just say HTFU! Big grin

Seriously...I haven't found anything to keep the little buggers away.

In New Zealand we call Anya Yams.

Hope it helps.

Wear a loose fitting top rather than a tighter fitting technical shirt or t-shirt. If they try and bite through the shirt, it is moving and makes it harder to get through the material to hit the skin. This works better if the loose shirt is worn over a tighter shirt. Also, wear a hat and hang a bandana from the under the hat to cover your neck. If it is hot, wet the bandana...it serves to keep them off your neck, don't be afraid to let the bandana cover your ears as well.

Or, run with someone who smells worse than you...

If they plant larva under your skin, can you post a video of the extraction in your training report? Big grin Better yet, work it into a race report where you free the buggers at the finish line Surprised
Great foods to eat during your run. I know you are hungry. :-)

I think the best advice was from Lynn. I tried running in northern Michigan last summer on dirt roads in the roads and bailed on my run cause the deerflies were driving me bonkers! Angry

Or you could be a total dork like me and wear one of those hunting net things over your hat so no-seeums and flies can't get to you. I recently got a Campmore catalouge that showed they also have lightweight no-seeum-proof pants and shirts. I was imagining myself in the whole getup and then thought, "Um. No."

What would be even better is running in JUST the netting. Big grin

I am looking at those for our trip to Alaska.... I guess the good news is I don't know anyone there.

I have found wearing white, and a white ball cap sprayed with bug dope helps. But I can't handle it when the orbit your head and don't let up. It really freaks me out.

I use an oil made by a local farmer called skeeter skedaddle that works pretty well. It isn't nearly as bad for you as deet, works much better, and makes you smell like a hippie. I will put some on my arms, legs and the back of my neck, and will then dry my hands off on my clothes. If I'm not wearing a hat I put it in my hair as well.

Try to avoid wearing white - it will look like a deer's ass and will attract the bugs more than a darker colored shirt would.

    Oh, and HTFU.

Last year while swimming in my cousin's pool, a horsefly bit my youngest on his head. It hurt A LOT and made him bleed so now he never wants to go back to my cousin's house. We've explained that it could happen anywhere but he won't budge on his thinking of how they will be looking for him to come back to that pool. Sad
