Any campers out there? I need some advice. My fiance's birthday is next month and I want to get him a new tent. He currently has a 3 person North Face tent, but it feels very small and cramped with both of us, our gear and the dog. I was hoping to upgrade to a 6 person tent. What would you suggest?

Background: We go camping about 4-6 times a year (he goes more, but then he can take the small tent). We usually go during the spring and fall (when it's not too hot or cold), but we've been known to go in February and August as well. Most of the time we pack the tent and gear in our canoe and do overnight floats on small trout streams in Southern Missouri. We don't backpack with it, so it doesn't need to be ultralight. And we're not camping on mountains or anything. Most important features are good ventilation, easy assembly, gear vestibule and a good rainfly.

These are the three I'm considering. Anyone have one of these brand? Pros? Cons? Other suggestions?

Fortunately, this thread is not about what I feared it was. Tongue

I can't speak to any of those tents specifically, but I'm familiar enough with Marmot and North Face stuff to recommend them (I don't have any experience with Mountain Hardware).

I'd also consider checking out Sierra Designs. I have a three-season tent that I got from them several years ago that is excellent.

Yes, this is how I would shop for a tent. "It's pretty, let's buy it!" Big grin Followed by Ryan telling me to go wait in the car. Roll eyes

Someday I will likely get a road bike (probably once the didlet is big enough for a junior road bike, then the 3 of us can ride together). I know fit is most important, but some bikes are just so danged pretty. I like Bianchis with their "celeste green" or whatever the hell they call that funky retro aquamarine.

Grabbed my interest, too.

50% off Mountain Hardware would dictate my decision. Good gear. I'd look for a 4 person, as 6 may be too large. Compare the sq. 'age of your tent with that of ones you are considering. I'd probably get a four season, too. Also, if you can get somewhere (REI, EMS, etc.) where some are set up, that'd be good.

Of the pix you posted, the Marmot looks the nicest.

A couple years ago, we scored a Coleman, I think, 4 person at Target for under $100. Has been used numerous times and has held up well. But I want something more rugged. I really wanna go camping. Wife and I have been talking about it for like a month.

What I hate about all the tents I've bought is having to seal the seams myself.

Ive never had the products you mention, but the things i'd watch out for are the materials used, weight, and atmospheric conditions it will be in.

As your not hiking with it, the weights not too much an issue. For the materials I would make sure the poles are good rigid aluminum alloy or strong fibre glass. The outer layer is flame retardant and waterproof, with the inner layer breathable, seam protection and UV fly cover is important too if your in sunnier climes..

Not sure if you get this brand over there, but vango http://www.vango.co.uk/ do top quality products.

I don't really know anything about those brands, but we have a six man Coleman that is similiar in design to the Marmot you show there. We really like it, it's light weight and everything fits in one bag. (Well it came in one bag...it sometimes takes a while to get it back in that same bag.)

Ours even has a divider in the middle which made my teenage daughters feel so much more private lol Smile

Man, I need to go camping, but then people post stories of weirdos in the woods or I watch TruTV. Angry.

Sad fact: Last few times I put up tents, I ended up staying in a hotel. Big grin

Can I have the old tent? Cool Dog? hmm maybe not.

Anyways, I prefer dome type (simple) tents, but you usually don't get the height other designs offer. Height might be something you should consider.

I would suggest looking for one with more than one door to make getting up to answer nature's call in the middle of the night less disruptive. Also, unless you want this tent to last you through several toddlers, I'd stick with a 4 person... 6 just seems HUGE.

You won't necessarily get the best prices here, but REI has a store in St. Louis. Excellent place to by high quality outdoor gear.

You think? I guess I need to go check them out in the store. We have a 3 person tent now, which feels incredibly small. Double the size is still going to be tight with 2 people, a dog and a couple bags of gear. They're definitely not made for people to stretch out will all kinds of stuff. I'll have to do a recon mission at REI. Fun!

I bought a Swiss Army 4 person off ebay and I absolutely love it. Definitely big enough for both of us, gear and dog. granted...we go 'car camping' generally speaking, so we can leave stuff in the car too.
MTA: I haven't had to seam-seal it either, we've camped in pouring rain with no problems.
