not new to running, just to training groups on this site. If i am to join before jan 1, will it put me in the current one or the one starting jan 1?

It will put you in the current group but (if you're referring to the mileage groups for example) the mileage standings will all be reset on January 1. At least that's how I think it works.

Yeah, I think you can join and leave at this point and it just uses your YTD mileage.
