Mountain Dew really went through a makeover. Now it's the high caffeine drink... the 'energy drink' right before red bull et al came on the scene. Mountain Dew = extreme sports (though not as much in the past couple years, thanks again red bull et al). This transformation to "drink for a younger generation" started in the 80s.
Did you ever wonder why it's called "Mountain Dew" though?
When I was a kid, Mountain Dew... while still the same pee yellow funny tasting drink with a ton of caffeine... had a wholly different spin and marketing campaign. It was a country bumpkin drink. The bottles sported hillbillies!

One wonders 1) the original pitch (who was this aimed at???) and 2) the makeover pitch ("let's take the hillbilly drink and make it something high schoolers want!") |

X-games are the new Hillbilly games. The Hillbilly games were awesome back in the 50's. But they lost their cable deal after someone complained about cruelty to animals.

Get your corn out of my thread!
As for hillbilly games, you can put lipstick on a pig, but you can't put a pig on a snowboard. |

| puttin' lipstick on a pig was only part of the 1957 games. They found the winners would disappear into the woods with their pigs too often. |

Here's something that combines two things which have changed: 1) the existence of cigarette commercials and 2) shows using the cast in their "brought to you by..." commercials.
This commercial should trip you out completely.
The Flintstones want you to smoke Winstons.
Incidentally, for those who don't know... The Flintstones originally was a night-time show targeting adults. |

Another thing that was very different was that TV... ALL TV... went off the air at midnight or 1a with the national anthem.
Oh yeah. I spent much of my childhood in small and medium-town Texas (Brownwood and Lubbock). We had cable, but cable back then was 5-10 stations.
One of these stations was black and white. It was a camera that spent the whole day panning across a series of dials/gauges that told you stuff about the weather and the time. All day long... time, temperature, humidity, windspeed.
No forecasts. No radar. Just these damn dials. ALL DAY LONG.
Did anyone else have this? I always assumed it was common. |

No! Not Dick Van Dyke!
I was born because of the Dick Can Dyke Show, so sez my mom. Apparently mom and dad were watching, and she decided to NOT get her diaphragm...and ....of course in order to keep watching...they needed to arrange themselves accordingly...oh, never mind...
You know, I didn't want to hear that from my mom...she's now 78, and just told me that story a couple years ago...
I'll bet YOU didn't want to hear it, either!

| My TV used to be black and white, now there are all of these strange colors. What's up with that? |
