| It starts Friday here in MD. It's already in affect in VA. We went to a bar, and people had to go outside to smoke. How weird is that ? Glad I quit 10 years ago! |

We've had one statewide in Ohio for a couple years, and in our county for a year or two beyond that.
It's been nice when I've been in bars to not come out smelling like a chimney. Almost enough to make me wish I still spent time every weekend doing the late-night bar band scene.

| We have had it a few years here in GA and it has made going to restaurants very nice. It seems they used to put the smoking section between the door and the non-smoking section so you had to walk through it to go sit and eat. |

CA has been a no smoking state for years. In fact, a year or two ago, they banned smoking in city parks and beaches. You already can't smoke in any building(except a private residence) or public seating area like the Stadium and Petco Park. I don't realize how spoiled we are until I travel. |

| In Ontario, they are considering legislation that would ban smoking in any private car transporting a minor. I think they should extend it to private residences where minors reside. Smoking is dumb. |

It would never work in Spain! It's practically written into their constitution that they can smoke wherever and whenever. When people ask me about living here I say they smoke and drink like crazy, sleep in the afternoons and stay up late at night, but bike and run like nobody's business. And everything involoves the kids (love the playground equipment next to the outdoor bars!).
But glad to have the smoking ban. It's been like that for a while in Florida. Hated losing the tips (smokers tend to tip better) but nice to be able to breathe. And that's coming from a former smoker. |

That would be nice here in the states, too. I am asthmatic...my folks smoked in the house and in the car when I was little (eventually my mom quit and started making my dad smoke outdoors and not in the car). Coincidence? My dad suffered a stroke on Easter and FINALLY found reason to quit. Sheesh.

I personally don't like the smoking bans in restaurants/bars. While I agree that it is nice to walk out of a bar and not smell bad, I don't think the government has any business telling a restaurant or bar owner that their patrons can't indulge in a legal exercise. If no smoking is a good idea then let the owner make that determination. Here in CT we have the ban, but people can smoke in casinos or private clubs. The whole premise of the banning was to protect employees from second hand smoke. Are these employees less worthy?
It's all bs. If the government hates smoking so much they should ban it but you'll never see it because the states and the federal government are addicted to the tax money they can spend. |

They're considering that law in Bangor, Maine also. It will be interesting to see if it passes. Maine has been non-smoking everywhere for a few years, and I really like it. I remember going to Luby's Cafeteria as a child and practically gagging from the people smoking all around our table. Blech! Non-smoking sections usually don't work that great.

Being a former smoker I like the laws (now) because of the smelling like a chimney. On the other hand I can see how the smokers feel about this issue.
One thing that they do in Japan in the airports, which is good for the smokers and the non-smokers is they have rooms that you can smoke in. It was super ventilated if you walked right by the door you could not smell the smoke at all. If bars/rest. would go with something like that then I would have no problem with it at all.

I am a non-smoker who dislikes smoking, but these laws are a bunch of bs.
In DC, I thought they had a ban. Shoot they even had no smoking signs up, but people were still lighting up in where I was at.
My favorite signs are the Drug and Gun Free Zones.... They're just signs.

We have that law in Rhode Island in all bars and restaurants with one exception: the state-run video casinos. You drive by those places on the highway and you smell like smoke. How fair is that to all the bars and restaurants outside of the casino?
I do enjoy being able to go to a restaurant now and being able to breath clean air. The oppression of smokers is over. They still litter like crazy, throwing their butts on the ground. I guess when you dirty your body, it's the next easy step. Nasty habit.
