Modal, is it gone completely, or just dim and hard to read? Either way, I'd try battery replacement.

Last night it was dim, but now it's completely gone. Watch otherwise functions well. I might just buy one at Walmart tonight.

Unless it was an expensive model, that's probably less hassle than trying to replace the battery anyways.
