I love Popular Science mag and last month they had an interesting article about Second Life, which is basically an online world (think EverQuest or another role-playing game but it isn't a game, it's just life). People use it for fun, dating, inventing, and even some companies are starting to use it for training. Here's a link to the article: http://www.popsci.com/popsci/technology/7ba1af8f3812d010vgnvcm1000004eecbccdrcrd.html
Anyway, I thought it was interesting and wondered what others thought. The idea is to eventually make it so that the internet is 3D -- for banking you have your avatar walk into a bank, for trying on clothes you have an avatar with your measurements try sizes/styles on for you, etc. I haven't tried it yet, but figure I will soon just for kicks.
edit: ...just to mention that Harvard has a virtual campus in second life. |
