someone used by credit card (Read 349 times)
posted: 3/24/2008 at 9:05 PM
My bank sent me an email alert and after talking to them I found out that someone used my credit card. This is a card I never carry with me and have only used a few times on line. Although my NYT is charged to it every month.

The bank is locking the card and sending me a new one. Should I worry a lot? Is there something more I should do? I am completely dependent on the 'net because I spend so much time outside the country but now I am scared.

You should be OK. This sort of thing happened to me a few years back. Your bank has handled it just as my CC company did. I had my replacement card the next day.

Avoiding buying stuff on the internet is no guarantee you won't have problems. Our local supermarket, Hannaford Brothers, just announced that four million credit card and debit card numbers were stolen while data was enroute (however that is possible!). So far, 1800 people have had unauthorized transactions made on their cards. We use that store all the time, so I'm checking my cc statement often. It took Hannaford's awhile to make the problem public, so they may be in hot water.

Yep. Or you sign the CC slip in a restaurant and leave it with the tip amt. on the table of a restaurant.... Nowadays I don't think the full # is ever on these or on receipts, but I think a malicious party can gain access to a # of they really want to and know how. My # somehow was used by someone in Eastern Europe. My CC company said there are dishonest people everywhere. Maybe someone working at an online company I shopped with, maybe someplace else. Chances are they sold my # to someone overseas.

That's a bummer you guys both went through that. I haven't gotten a new number yet - I guess I'm hoping I won't have a problem. We use our CC for EVERYTHING to get the airline miles (I'm getting a free trip to South Africa in November that way), and pay it off every month. So I have our entire number, exp. date, and security code memorized - comes in handy over the phone! I don't want to have to memorize a new one. Clowning around

You are always safer when you use a credit card. If someone stole or cloned your debit card you would be screwed.

This is true. If you have your debit card # stolen the bank isn't going to work nearly as hard to get YOUR money back--but when someone fraudulently uses your CC that bank will do everything to get the money back, since it's their money.

You will most likely be fine. Mine got used after I bought my garmin from some company.com off the Internet. After it happened I read the reviews for the site and I wasn't the only one. All turned out fine, but it's kind of makes you feel like somebody crapped in your bed.

If you are really concerned you might want to get a copy of your credit report. You are allowed to get a free copy once yearly from each of the credit reporting companies (Experian, Trans Union, and Equifax) You will not get your credit score for free, but you can see all of the open credit under your name.

I had this happen a year ago with my Discover Card. All of the sudden I couldn't access my account from the internet and when I called they explained that someone had randomly acquired my card and was buying international foods in NYC. When I asked how they knew it wasn't me they said that they track everything you do and this seemed out of place, etc. Hmmm! Big Brother really is watching but in this case it helped me!

I've never had my card frozen because someone else was using it, but I've had it frozen when *I'VE* been using it!! It was a rare day when I went looney crazy shopping and was cha chinging all over the place. It actually got frozen right in the middle of my darned shopping trip. Day off. Was having fun. I was on the phone forever trying to get it resolved. Great that it was monitored so well, but put a slight damper on the day. Probably good that I was stopped. Big grin

Good advice, I'll get on that. Thanks
