Goal of Sub-3 Hour Marathon (Read 15845 times)

Ok, this is it. If running a sub-3 hour marathon is one of your major goals feel free to post your training here, ask questions, offer comments, articles, etc. Although this is primarily a thread for those trying to reach the goal, contributions from those who are already running at that level are welcome. We need all the help we can get! Immediately below I will start a “Hopefuls” list of those who expect to make a serious attempt sometime by the end of 2009. If you know the date, location, and name of next marathon attempt, let me know and I will include it next to your handle. Below the Hopefuls list will be a “Graduates” list for those who have broken through since joining the thread. _______________________________________________________________________________________ HOPEFULS:

Hi Jim, Okay I'll be the first to bite. The fact that there may be a new marathon in Santa Barbara in December 2009 has been sufficient to nudge me over the edge. If the Santa Barbara International Marathon doesn't happen then I may do the California International Marathon in Sacramento instead (also in December 2009). Either way I'd be aiming for sub-3 hours. I'm hoping to get my 1/2 time down to around 1.27 this year, and then under 1.25 next year so I don't think sub-3 is unrealistic in that time frame except for the fact I haven't run a marathon before. Two days to go to the Pier to Peak 1/2 marathon for me (4,000ft of elevation gain) - I'm looking to go sub-2 hours this year. Expect to see a race report sometime on Sunday. John

Hey Ken, I don't thnk that "SanHoser R$R" was a typo. Wow! That is by far the highest entry fee I ever paid. I have to say it was worth it though. If you are a "hopeful" then I am "hope and a prayer"

Hi John, You were good luck for me on the sub-40 thread but I'm afraid I'll be needin at least twice that much for this one. Good luck at Pier to Peak.

dunno if it's worth anything, but Daniel's equivalent performances pass my sniff test better than the others. The older you are, the less speed you need (in my personal opinion.) My formula, sim to McMillan's? is t2=t1*(d2/d1)^1.06

It took me 6 tries to go sub-3 for the first time. Let me tell you - it was a great feeling to look down at my watch at mile 19 and realize that I had to run a full minute over my goal pace in order to not make my goal - and I was still under or at the goal pace at that point.

Jim you just had to do it didn't you? I will be satisfied with a 3:10:59 for the BQ but I am ultimately going for a 2:59:59. I will run the City of Oaks(Raleigh) Marathon on 11/02/08. It is a tough course but I train on it all the time so hopefully I will do well. I did a nice 16 mile run in Umstead last week. We held it at about 7:45 until 13 miles. Then they cranked it down to 7:00 flat and I just could not hang. Oh well, there is always next week.

Yeah, $95 at the expo. Brutal.

I'm thinking about trying to go sub 3 at NYC next year. It all depends on if I redshirt my freshman year of college or not. If I do redshirt and my coach allows me to I'll make an attempt.

I'm game. Doing Memphis (12/6/08)--getting some good training in. This is my first marathon, so we'll see. I'm hoping to be in 2:50 shape, but it's better to err on the side of caution.

I am a "hopeful", Jim. I'm planning tentatively to run Rocket City Marathon 12/13/08. I ran here for my first M last year. It's tentative cause I'm currently in a slump and not sure if I'll be ready. And I want if things don't turn-around soon. *I need to find a spring marathon nearby. That's been a thought since it looks like I may not run Boston. Undecided I'd appreciate if anyone could suggest a fast one neighboring Tennessee (feb-april). *I believe Chicago would give me my best opportunity to run sub-3, but I no nothing about how to get into it since it's so large? Some info on that would be helpful. I would like to get this done in my second marathon. If not, three's a charm. I don't want to waste a chance, fall short and give up on it. So by end of '09 (better if'08), I want to see 2:5?:??!

If you want to run it this year you can have my number Sad I might have a stress fracture in my foot and it's derailed my training. Even if it is not a fracture I probably won't be running at all till October Angry Sub 3 is a long term goal of mine, I'm not really close to it yet. Thought I might have a chance at a BQ in Chicago and sub 3 next year but that seems like it is out.

Hey, so far we got two possible CIM tries (Jim and Norrin). I'll also be running the CIM. I've never run it but I've heard it is one of THE fast (downhill, not out&back) marathon courses out there.
