Q about running on a track (Read 625 times)

This is probably really dumb of me, but for those of you who run on an outdoor track - where do you go? At a school? Is this allowed? Do they have the right to kick you out? I've never ran on a track since HS so I was just wondering.
Our local high school track is public property--anyone can use it when it's not in use by the school or someone who has a permit for an event. It's officially open from dawn 'til dusk but I've run on it plenty of times pre-dawn and nobody has ever bothered me. I've heard that in some other parts of the country, public school tracks are not open to the public. I always thought that was strange.

I've even ran on them during track practice or gym class and noboday has ever told me to get off. A high school track is closest to me and one I use most often. There are also 2 community college tracks I occasionally use. I live in Bay Area of California.

Hub and I almost always run on our local Middle school track. Because we live in such a populated area, running on the roads is down right dangerous most of the time, so this option has been great for us. Also, being so new to the running, it is a slightly more groomed surface, and not so tough on the legs, slightly softer surface to land on. The only drawback is that it is painfully boring. Got to make sure that you bring the tunes, as there is not much in the way of scenery. We save the road running for the weekends when the traffic is next to none on those early morning runs. Smile

          One day at a time

I run on our high school track, too. Kids of all ages use it during the day, so I just pretend I don't see them staring at me as I run SLOWLY past them!

Been there, done that...! Many times I've gone over the fence to get into a local high school track. Public or not, some of them are locked and it might take some creative solution... Ask a local high school track coach; they usually know which track does NOT have a fence/lock. I usually go to one of those tracks (low fence, usually not locked). I usually take a philosophy of "better to ask forgiveness than permission". One time, I needed to use a local community center's track for filming (Lydiard hill training video). I called the community center office and they told me it's not open to public. I talked to MDRA's office manger and she told me to just go ahead and use it. I went there next morning for filming; it was not locked and, not only that, there was a group of about 10 people running around! None of them even thought about asking permission! I have used several different tracks in the past; some of them I even know which side the "low" spot is on the fence! ;o) Kind of a fond memories... Throwing spike shoes over the fence was kind of a ritual...

I run at a very nearby private high school. I've been escorted out by security twice. The last time it was less than friendly. But it's private. I think with a public school you're probably fine. If they try to kick you out, mumble something about your tax dollars paying their salary. They'll like that.

I was just going to say; if nobody chases you out, just go ahead and run around. I guess that COULD happen...! In regards to "mumbling"; of course, I guess I COULD pretend I don't understand a word of English and ignore...! ;o) A bit of digression; at college, my friend got a parking ticket from one of those street parking meter. She brought it to the court and she said, "The machine said 'Expired' and I didn't understand that word so I checked it wirh my dictionary. It says 'Expired' means 'not working (=out of order)'..." She got away with it! Good to be a dumb foreigner once in a while... ;o)

Our public school tracks are open at any time to the public EXCEPT during school hours or when teams are using the track or football field. But if you want to run at midnight...have a ball!
