no matter what I order (if it is a dinner place too) that it'll be about 1,800-2,000 cals. For me that means nearly starving all day in order to enjoy my dinner. It pisses me off actually. Why can't eating establishments make meals that are 700 cals or something?

I think a LOT of it is portion size. Restaurant portions are often 2-3x what they really need to be. It's insane. I often plan to eat only half and get a box for the remainder...makes for a nice lunch the next day, too.

i think thats likely to be very true. on the couple of times i've been over to the US i've been astonished at the portion sizes. mostly i've been unable to eat more than half whats been put on my plate in a restaurant.

THAT"S the nice thing about training for a marathon! You can actually finish what's on your plate when going to a sit down resteraunt and the calories don't bother ya Wink

I have to dissagree with you here!!! I eat VERY VERY healthy. Very little processed food. RARELY eat any fast food, BUT when I do it taste's GREAT!!!

Do you eat plenty of delicious natural animal fats? Many people think "healthy" means "low fat". But that's a point of some debate.

I stopped liking fast food when I started eating lots of good quality meat, eggs, and dairy. By "good quality" I mean stuff you can't find in most supermarkets. Cows that live on grass. Chickens that eat plants and bugs. Fresh and local.

Anyway, I'm sure everyone is different. I don't know at what point I eventually became a food snob. I just know that now fast food is so inferior to the homemade stuff I'm used to that it really doesn't interest me at all.

My MIL is of the mindset that all fat = evil...but her triglycerides aren't all that stellar, nor are her general cholesterol levels.

I have never shunned fat, love real butter, natural cheese...and my cholesterol and triglycerides are outstanding, even though I have significantly more body fat than my MIL. She is 5'8" and whines that at 140#s she's the heaviest she has ever been. I'm 5'3.5" and weigh the same amount and have struggled with my weight all of my adult life.

Yep I eat LOTS of healthy fats. Bison, Salmon, and nuts are staple's in my diet. Not sure about what exactly "my Bison" fed on and the Salmon I eat ISN"T farmed!

OH and ice cream. I get lots of fat from that Tongue

I am partially agreeing with Ed on this debate.
Fastfood doesn't interest me at all. I think the last time I've been to the "golden arches" was about 2 years ago? KFC 3 years ago, Taco Bell in the 90's and NEVER AGAIN.... Even when I am on the road, I would rather not eat if Mackie D & Co. were the only choice.

I like to cook and started to try recipes from "Cooking light". They don't shun any foodgroup. They generally aim for lower calorie recipes. They use interesting ingredients and spices. Love it!
The part where I am not with Ed is the buying of the ingredients. I simply have not found an economic and time efficient way to buy local and organic. I do buy meat and produce at the grocery store. But hey, I use fresh ingredients for my cooking - that's a start! I have gotten used to these meals and like and crave them. (So does DH Smile) When we go out to eat we tend to frequent the same 2 places - local Thai and Indian place. We eat out 1-2 times a month.

When I travel a lot (last 2 weeks for example), I have to eat out for every meal. I notice that no matter how hard I try, the portion sizes I eat grow over time and I am hungrier between meals. But at the same time, I am so sick and tired of it after a while. The second week of my trip I didn't even know where to go for dinner at night anymore, nothing sounded good. It seems not so off when Zoomie refers to certain food items as "crack". Processed food seems to make you addicted.

And in line with muserunner - I wish too that there were restaurants that'd offer a plate for 700cals not swimming in grease.

Run whenever you can, walk if you must, crawl if you have to - but never give up! ........

I can certainly relate. I too end up buying things that aren't as great as I wish they were. Thankfully there are literally dozens of farmers markets near here, at least during the growing season.

The thing that irks me most right now are the stupid laws against raw milk. You can buy it, but only directly on the farm. Which takes a good two hour round trip for me. Sometimes we take a trip down on a weekend and stock up, but it's just not practical very often. That stuff is delicious though...

Speak for yourself - I'll still end up whale-size no matter how many calories I burn in a week.

In many states, the punishments for buying or transporting raw milk are worse than those for buying or transporting certain drugs, such as marijuana.

AMEN! unless it's for raw soy milk or any milk produced from beans. Tongue Rice milk should be exempt too... in addition to coconut milk...

The two best ways I have ever heard fast food described -

1) They have perfected the process of making candy... out of meat.

and

2) Bowel grout.
