Is this picture running uphill, basically flat, or downhill? Extra credit to anyone who can tell where this section is in the race. Use the urls below to see the course elevation and speed profile.

From the 2008 Raleigh Capital City Classic 10K,

Speed:

Elevation

Appears to be uphill, I'd guess at the 1.5 mile mark (although the crowd seems to be awfully thin for that early in the race).

Correct on the race. Not correct on the location and I won't comment on whether it is up, down, or flat until more people make a guess.

Of course, since you are asking the question, it likely is not really down/up. But that sure is one heck of an illusion! It would imply perhaps a flattening from a downhill or a flat portion with a small bump up. I like the idea of a downhill that flattens, such as what we see on the profile at mile 4, right before the major drop.

If you're asking about the guy in the front, I'd say uphill. The people in the background look to me to be going downhill. Looks like it switches around the intersection.

Yeah, I think that is what we are supposed to think. But, as I said, since he is asking the question, that is not likely the true answer.

I'm going to say it's that little dip right at mile 2 (the photographer is at the top of the hill). Stroller guy is going up hill, people in the back are coming downhill.

Let me clarify.

Is the road at the top of the picture at the same altitude as the road at the bottom of the picture. Or is the top lower or higher than the bottom.

Also I am the guy with the stroller in the picture and the speed and elevation profiles were from my Garmin. Take a look at how much the stroller can affect your speed. I was running flat out as hard as I could the entire time.

I am still lost. Is there something that you wanted to point out? I'd be happy to get it, but I just don't. Yet.

I'm changing my guess.

Since your login name is JDF, i'm going to guess you're the John F. who finished in 8:05 mins/mile. (even though your speed profile looks faster than that).

The time stamp on the photo: CapitalCityClassicUphillorDownhill.jpg is 9:21:46 on 4/19/08. I'm going to assume that the race started at 9, and divde time by speed to get that you're at mile 2.7. This is a flat spot on the course, confirming Trent's thought that you wouldn't have asked unless it was an illusion.

QED

(unless the race started a minute or two early or late, then i'm off.
Doh! I'm going to bed.)

Ok I will end the suspense if there is any? This picture was taken around mile 5.3. Every part of the road in that picture is uphill. Isn't it interesting how you can look at the picture three different ways? It can look flat, uphill, or downhill.

I actually wrote this post after seeing heartbreak hill in the Boston on Monday. I thought that doesn't look so tough. 4:36 up that hill should be no problem. Then I came back to earth and remembered how tough pushing the kids up that "mini" hill was. Try pushing 100+ pounds up any incline and you will respect even the slightest hill.

My best mile that day was a 5:43 my worst was an 8:08(Up that hill). The picture does not neccessarliy show you how steep the hill is. However, I can tell you that it hurt, A lot!

Anyway, I just thought that was a pretty cool picture.

The point is that you can not tell how steep a hill is by watching a video or seeing a picture. For instance the coverage of heart break hill didn't look so tough on Monday until you saw how fast all of the other runners faded! I know that course must be a lot tougher than it looked on TV!

I know what you mean about real hills. However, even short extremely steep hills can be tough when you bring your kids along for the ride. I was reduced to walking the first time ever when I attempted the course below with my son in the stroller! Trust me I was way past 45 degrees on that hill! It actually hits something like 70 degrees around mile 1.4!
