20 minute workout? (Read 1215 times)

Beware, batbear...

Howdy folks.  We just bought a set of weights (3 lbs, 5 lbs, 8 lbs, and 12 lbs) and I've got about 20 minutes in the morning before I get ready to go to work to use them.  Any ideas, websites, etc?

Most of Crossfit's workouts are designed for < 20 minutes. Squat thrusts would be a good use of 20 minutes. Or perform a squat while holding the dumbells at shoulder level and then press them up at the top. (I forget what that's called). Kind of a squat and press.

MTA: SI.com has the Chris Chelios Hour of Power that you could just shorten to 20 minutes.

You're talking about front squat / push press combos, which Crossfit calls thrusters.  A great workout that incorporates these (which just so happens to be 20 minutes) is called the Dumbbell Bear

Batensmack, you are going to need to get some bigger dumbbells if you want to do anything really effective.  Most of the functional exercises are going to require a minimum of 25 lb dumbbells for a male beginner.  Personally I like plate-loaded dumbbell handles.  You can get the handles at WalMart for $5 each and then 100 lbs of plates for about $80.

A favorite workout of mine has become: For time, do 5 dumbbell snatch each arm, 5 dumbbell swing each arm, 10 burpees, rest 60 seconds, and repeat 5 times.  This workout takes about 12 minutes for me with a 50 lb dumbbell and is absolutely excruciating.

With those weights, I would focus on lunges, squats, push ups and core work. Not enough weight to isolate chest, bis etc. Focus on total body core movements.
