...and I was so happy that I did.

I got home from work and got the message that my new Asics were at the running store waiting for me. Just then my 17 y/o asks me if we can join the XC club at the park for a run at 7:00. I told him that would work out perfectly since it was just 6:00 and we could stop at the running store and pick up my shoes and then head over for the run. THEN my 7 year old says to me "can I go to the park too?". I can't say no to that. So off we went, the three of us. An expensive stop at the running store for my shoes, my son's new running shoes and inserts, and some Body Glide and we were on our way to the park.

My oldest son stretched while I chatted with the coach. She was confused as to why I wasn't running with them this time, and then my youngest son got out of the car as I explained why I wasn't running. Then off the team went as my youngest and I headed down the trail to walk along the river.

We had a great time! We skipped rocks, which required a lesson for my son since he had enjoyed just chucking them in up till that point. Then we explored and we saw a tadpole, a crayfish, lots of minnows, some snails, geese, ducks and a couple of deer. That was the first time he had ever seen a tadpole, which made me a little sad actually. When my older kids were his age and younger we were always at parks and exploring. We walked two miles during all of this and my son was so proud of that mileage, he said that it was almost a 5k (proving to me that he does pay attention to our running talk!). We also got to see the sun starting to set and enjoyed seeing the sky changing colors.

As we walked the trail and a few runners passed us, I looked down at my brand new shoes and thought, well, at least I'm wearing them today even if it's not while running.

That's all. I just wanted to share why I ditched my run.
Of all the reasons to have a ditch a run, this has been my favorite by far. Smile

Time spent with family is absolutely priceless. I know exactly how you feel.

I love running, but I'd trade every mile I've ever run for one more day with my dad. I'd also trade any particular run for ten minutes throwing the football with my eight year old. Life is too short.

Right on Michelle! Best reason I've heard for ditching a run too.

Thanks for reminding me/us that sometimes you just have to stop and smell the flowers.

Michelle, you have healthy priorities...and your little guy will see that from your actions, too. Good lesson.

Can you teach me how to skip rocks, too? I still can't do that, even though my dad and did are both really good at it. Blush

That is a perfect night. Those are the moments you can't get back later! Good call to dump the run.

It was fun teaching him, and safer than not teaching him. Before that he had me fearing for my life, no matter where I was the rocks he threw always came too close to me. Made me wonder where he was actually aiming! Big grin

Thanks for sharing, Michelle! Reminds me that I need to wander around outdoors with my kids again. You're right, they don't play outside like we used to.

You'll have plenty of opportunities to use your new shoes - you made the right call!

Mississippi - I enjoyed that read.....next thing you know your young son will start running too.....I know my son used to run with me when he was 6 (not very far, but he loved to do it)......

My son (now 16) won tickets to a Baseball game (minor league team) so we skipped our run and he took us to the game (he was so happy that he had the tickets).........it was fun to go do something with the family......it definately helps sort out the priorities....
Goals: Weight goal 140 (currently 147) - but down from 165

5K in less then 27:00 ( Ran my last 5k in 27:00 FLAT, which was a MAJOR disappointment - Now I'm working very hard to improve this 5K time)

So sweet. It's walks like those where you really get to know what's in a persons heart. The one-on-one time is priceless.

I get sad that my 4 year old hasn't seen a tadpole, too. Sad I've tried my best to find him some. Gotta keep trying Smile .
