I watched a friend complete a first marathon this weekend -- 28 degrees and accumulating snowfall.
Visibility was really low and I heard one person remark that they "counted the # of people in front by the total footprints". My pictures did not come out well, so picked these up from the site...

I think the worst was my 15k last month. The day of the race was beautiful and sunny, but the day before ~6" of heavy, wet snow had fallen. The course was mainly on gravel and paved backroads, so nothing was plowed and there was some ice. I placed in my AG...I credit my consistent outdoor running all Winter long for that feat (and the fact that there were a lot of slow folks out that day, heh. Blush ).

When I lived in NYC, I showed up for a 10K in central park when it was snowing and the roads hadn't been plowed yet. They decided that 6 inches of snow on a hilly course was too dangerous and turned it into a fun run. Usually the NYRRC races got 1000+ racers, this one had something like 60.

It probably had to be the Boston Marathon a few years ago - training for Boston in the Boston area sucks. I had been training in pretty much freezing temperatures with snow and then the day of the race it was 94 degrees out, not a cloud in the sky.

½ marathon (called the Hypothermic, no less) in February a few years ago. -27 with a headwind the whole way. (incl. windchill - still freaking cold)Point to point, so that was possible, and along the Bay of Fundy coast. Beautiful, sunny, and frigid. Everyone came in coated in ice. Pretty awsome, really.

Unfortunately, there's none of me, not that you can identify people unless you can recognize their gear.
2008 Goals: 5K PB - Hopefully at CF Nationals Run another ½ marathon Run consistant milage

I ran in a 10k in February this year, 37 degrees, pouring rain and a little wind. It was funny because everyone was just looking around at each other, laughing. It was nice knowing I wasn't the only crazy one out there.

15k in March last year that included:

45 degrees and sunny at start - so far so good
about 15 minutes after the gun a Midwest weather front comes calling with
30 mph gusts
10 degree drop in temp
rain (what we would call a toad strangler)
sleet
hail (only gravel size but when propelled by 30 mph wind it hurts)
back to rain which flooded streets
and for a final insult - a finish under partly cloudy skies with some sun and 40 degrees.

Welcome to running in the breadbasket of America.

I've run short races like 5K-10M in just about every kind of weather; hot, cold, wind, rain, loads of rain, ice, snow, etc.

The worst was the Boston Marathon 2004 when it wass 86 degrees and humid. My only trip to the med tent.

But 26 miles in 28 degrees with sideways snow? That sounds rough.

I have been lucky not to race in horrendous conditions. The worst I remember was a race in March 2002. It was not raining or snowing, but the wind was strong and cold. What I hated the most was I took an off day before the race to rest, and that day was great / gorgeous.
