Racing with hr monitor? (Read 438 times)

I just got back from a HM where I used my monitor. Used is probably not the right word but I did wear it.

The data from the monitor is pretty worthless without enough race experience to really understand what its telling you. For me, I use it as a way of confirming what feel is telling me. If it climbs too high too early, I know from experience that I'm in for trouble. After about mile 10, I ignore it completely and just run by feel and hold on to the end.

On the race I just finished, you could almost think of the race in thirds.

First third, first 40 minutes, I kept it under about 155 (my measured max is 183 or so). I exceeded this after taking a potty break and having to push hard to catch up with my running partner but managed to work it back down since it was mostly down hill.

The second third, I let it gradually creep up to 165 (next 45 minutes or so).

The last third (25 minutes or so to the end), there was a pretty wicked uphill and I just pushed through to hold my pace, ignoring the HR. That entire time was over 165 and mostly over 175 and even peaked at 182 at the top of the hill.

Don't know if the actual data helps, but that is how I (sort of) used it on my race. As I was running it, I didn't have a strict plan that I was sticking to, just adjusting my effort by feel and confirming it with the numbers. Then just trying to hold it together to the end.

During a race I simply monitor my splits not my HR. However; in my first racing season (2003) I wore my HRM on occasion during races (5k, 8k, 10k) simply to see how high my HR went rather as compared to training runs. I never used the information to alter my racing. It was just interesting to look at the data later. Like training runs, I saw changes as my fitness improved. These days I only wear the HRM during training runs, especially on long runs, to keep my pace in check.
"Only a few more laps to go and then the action will begin, unless this is the action, which it is."

5k PR: 18:15 (2008); 8k PR: 30:19 (2008); 10k PR: 39:04 (2008); 10M PR: 1:04:18 (2008); HM PR: 1:28.03 (2008)

I'd be surprised if it wasn't the same HM I ran.

Maybe I should have worn mine. I decided against it, and for some reason, the wheels came off about half way through the race and I struggled to even finish. No fun at all!

I just posted a race report. Has the HR and pace graphs. Hope that helps. Good day Big grin

For those that say that training and race HR are not equivalent, I would argue for something like Lactate threshold, it is in general not going to change much.

Last Paragraph

In other words, your HR is going to be elevated, thus negating your LTHR.

For me, my training heart rate zones align well with race heart rates. My lactate threshold is the same in both - perhaps my HR is not as affected by excitement, anticipation, etc...

Not one to argue with a running god though so perhaps I am a fluke relative to general running community.
