Quote from Trent on 4/10/2008 at 11:23 PM:
The real point I am making about preloading with water is that one should not water load the way you carb load. Any excess water you take in will go straight into the toilet and will take salt with it. Back to the start of this thread. Many folks drink 2-4 extra liters per day in the week leading up to the marathon. That is unnecessary and possibly deadly. In anything less than hot conditions, you can start out on even the dry side and hydrate as you go. It is better to finish a touch dehydrated than overhydrated. The former is uncomfortable. The latter can be fatal.

If you are more comfortable drinking a liter of fluid on race morning to top off the tank, go for it. But do not water or fluid load. If anything, salt load.

That explains my 2006 CMM. Apparently a week of guzzling water and Gatorade was bad. Go figure.

This has been a great thread, but now I'm starting to freak out about salt intake...I drink A LOT of water daily, but not much else. Methinks it's time to rethink this.

Preventing bonking is better achieved through proper training, a good pacing strategy and good prerace nutrition.

Agree 100%, but energy taken in during the race can make a huge difference, at least it has for me.

Obesity is a disease. Yes, a disease where nothing tastes bad...except salads.

Less water. More beer. And this is key: WITH PRETZELS. Wink

Wow, so when my bloods tests said mine were low, they were actually very low? I was given a potassium pill. I'm going to eat a banana, chips, and ice cream everyday for the rest of my life.

Ha! That is correct, though. A low serum potassium implies a very low body store of potassium.

That is where you have set your balance.

haha hey

i do rings...it's probably what you would all consider "gymnastics" but instead of a gymnast, I think acrobat is an appropriate hyperbole.

The only gymnast I know is also a bull rider. He says the gymnastics helps him with the bull riding more than any other training. So if you get bored and need a new sport there's always bulling riding.

I don't think that bull would be very happy if anyone yanks on his ring...I'm just sayin'. Clowning around

The only gymnast I know is my 8 year old daughter. She can do an un-spotted back handspring, among other things. And she has no fear. I could see her trying bull riding. She scares me, actually.

Not to treadjack, but have you (or anyone) been to the Yuengling brewery?
A cool place: old brick building, built into a mountainside in anthracite coal country. Good ol' Vitamin Y. I made several pilgrimages there when I lived in Philly.

I think you get docked points for that. My DH is an ex bareback rider, he thinks bull riders are nuts, horses buck you off, bulls buck you off and come hunt you down. He's been trying to break one of our horses for years. Maybe he needs to do some gymnastics first. Smile

I only add salt to water to create a cheap electro-conductive "gel" for my HRM. Smile
