FREEDOM!! Used baby jogger (Read 550 times)

As the weather improves I find myself increasingly insane running on my treadmill when it is 60 outside. My wife works a few hours later than I do and so I end up watching my 11-mo-old 3-4 days/week when I used to run. Some days she won't sleep, which means I can't run, so my training has really suffered.

Last night I picked up a used TREK baby jogger. She LOVES being outdoors and seems to be somewhat of a daredevil so I figured she should take to it well.

Any hints, warnings, or suggestions? I'll be doing my running on flat country roads with extremely light traffic and run 6:40-7min/mile for easy runs.

Just make sure she is secured in there good and that you keep that wrist strap thing on. I have seen a mother lose her stroller on a hill without it - scary.

That is really cool! My youngest is 5 and I wish I was running when she was younger. That seems like so much fun!

Good luck!

Hey:

I run with Lucian, my 2 year old, 2xper week. He digs it.

We've got a Bob, and I found it's good to have the bubble. I carry it around in the basket of the Bob just in case it rains. If you don't have a rain bubble, see if you can pick one for your runner.

I've also outfitted the runner with a battery powered light. It's a clip on that I put onto the handle bar.

Beside that, my only advice would be to avoid big hills.

Have fun.

That's Great; we had a q-series baby jogger, and it was fun when we used it.
Enjoy it while you can.

The only warning is if you have any niggling injury use caution with the jogger...it can throw off your stride enough to aggravate things...work in to it.

Make sure the wheel alignment is straight! Sometimes that's as easy as refilling the air in the tires to be equal on both sides. Mine still pulls right regardless. Drives me insane!

Also, be prepared for a real workout when it's even the slightest bit windy. This AM the winds were strong but I HTFU'd and ran anyway. It's like running with a parachute into the wind, but pushing it instead. I figure I'll be that much faster come race day! Big grin Not that I'm fast to begin with... Blush

Enjoy it! My DS LOVES it! He's ready for the morning run before I am!

Thanks for the comments. I have a rain cover that came on it. There is no wrist strap, but there are no hills either (freeway overpass is the largest for miles).

I never thought too much about the wind issue. That is going to be huge here. I only will use it on easy runs though, so I'm fine with going by effort level. Perhaps it will make up for my complete lack of hill work?

The seller warned me about alignment, suggested fiddling with the front wheel until it tracks straight.

Enjoy the jogger...I've done several races with my girls in the stroller and it's great fun. My oldest overheard me joking around with some friends before a race and then repeated what I had said to a complete stranger as I passed him..."Feel the BURN!"

I don't usually take the jogger out on roads unless I'm pretty sure it's deserted or wide enough. I try to stick to neighborhoods and bike trails (and races where the roads are closed).

My kids really liked the jogger. I bought a used as well, InStep Elite. It was very light and quick, I say IT WAS because the aluminum frame actually fractured (fatigued) so we don't have it any longer Dead . I didn't think to check the frame when I bought it, so I can't tell whether it was already starting to go.
Do make sure you check yours once in a while before going on a run.

Do you run with one hand on the bar at all times, once in awhile to direct, or what?

One hand on the bar at all times, usually two hands on the turns and uphill, try to keep up with the stroller on a steep downhill. Mine has a wrist strap but I've not used it.

For awhile, my older daughter loved having a picnic in the jogger. I'd make her a sandwich, some orange slices, etc. A few times I even let her hold a mini DVD player so she watched a movie while I got my run in. Pretty entertaining to get in 10+ miles while listening to Snoopy!

I also have a BOB and I swear by it. I have a 1 and 1/2 year old and she loves it! We go out 5 days a week. I prefer not to use the wrist strap but do keep one hand on at all times, alternate from time to time. If you don't use the strap, make sure it's tied up and out of the way. When I first started using the stroller, the strap came undone unkowingly, I stepped on it, and boom, collision with my daughter. Incidentally, she laughed at it. Also, if the front wheel is a fly wheel, make sure it is tightened securely when you go out. Sometimes with vibrations from bumps etc., it can loosen up. I've also had the front wheel fall off on me mid run. My daughter also laughed that one off. Just a few helpful hints. Please don't report me to DSS!
