Remember these guys?

This used to be a staple in the old cassette player when I would drive to see my fiancee (now wife of 25 years) when I was stationed in Norfolk VA.
What the hell was I thinking? And what the hell is up with the chick in the leotards doing backflips and hurdling TV's (other than the painfully obvious?) |

Must be the goofy, faux-regal sounding Moog Synthesiser that's throughout the song. "The Final Countdown" comes to mind when I hear it...

Hey, I still think that one's cool. I especially prefer the version by the formerly funny Mike Myers in So I Married an Axe Murderer. (I say formerly funny because it appears that The Love Guru is a major stinker).

Yeah, once that skit came out it definitely changed the associations for that song. I loved the episode when Jim Carrey hosted SNL. |

I'm with ya on that one andahuff. I think that song's great. A marching band favorite of mine in high school.
Asia was a supergroup comprised of former members of 70's prog-rock bands Yes, King Crimson, ELP, and others. Like most supergroups, the whole was less than the sum of their parts. But they did crank out some memorable songs.
I once say Asia (and Yes) guitarist Steve Howe do a great solo live show. The crowd loved it, and he showed his appreciation by coming out after the house lights were already up and doing a very ragged, impromptu, but passionate version of the Asia hit "The Heat of The Moment."

Ha, I think every marching band in the 80s did that song! I know our HS band did it, too! |

Okay here it is. I woke up thinking about this today.
MTA: I just realized that there is a fine line between no longer cool and still cool. We may be attempting to go where no man/woman has gone before by drawing the line. For some of us, it's painful to say that despite all the memories you, stupid song, no longer serve me. Still others of us refuse to admit that certain songs are no longer cool. They may have NEVER been really cool in the way that real jazz, crusty old sailors and the smell of cigars are cool...Sobering thoughts. |

For me, with rare exceptions, there seem to be few songs that I liked or thought were cool that I don't still enjoy on some level. So while society may no longer think the song is cool, most songs that I've ever liked still serve me in some way, if only to paint a vivid picture of my life at the time the song came out (or in the case of older music, the time I discovered it -- Led Zeppelin II reeks of 1990 for me because that's when I really started digging them).
I should mention that despite my profile here at RA, I'm actually 88 years old, and I still drive my schooner through the Grand Banks because I can. I'm currently smoking a Montecristo No. 4, and listening to Birth of the Cool. On vinyl. |

Some day I'm gonna figure out how to use two quotes in my reply - sorry for the copy/paste...
I'll stick by my original post regarding the song. Even though I listened to it quite a bit in it's time (note the reference to Norfolk, VA - "crusty old sailor" ... check), it's not a song, or group, that retained it's coolness for me. For that matter, I never really bought into the "Asia/Damn Yankees/Traveling Wilburys" type of groups brought together to put out "megasongs" and make quick $$.
I agree that most songs, regardless, have a place in life's timeline. They speak to a particular place, mindset, situation... as the years pass, it's pretty amazing how strong some of the emotions can be when a particularly meaningful (to me) song is played. That's one reason why I like the playlist function on my iPod.
In the final analysis, it's just "To each his-or her-own." I have plenty of stuff in my collection that would rate me very high most people's Dork-o-Meter. That's OK, because (1) I am a Dork and (2) I don't care. It makes me happy. |

In defense of my beloved Wilburys (RIP Roy and George), this was originally just a bunch a buddies who got together to record a B-side for George's single "This is Love." But the resulting song was so strong ("Handle With Care"), that they decided to do a whole album, which they spent all of about 9 days recording. Now the second, somewhat inferior album (strangely titled "Volume 3") was a bit of a letdown and may have been a cash-grab more than anything else. |
