Loose bowels when I run (Read 2080 times)

I tried the coffee thing this morning. On rising from my slumber, I immediately went out unaided. I then made a cup of instant coffee and laid in bed for another 20 minutes I then got up, did a number of abdominal exercises, and was able to make a small pass. This seems to have help, as I was able to do a 14 miler without a stop. However, I had to make a beeline for the small room once I got home. The darn coffee continues to churn my stomach but it has only led to some small and frequent release about three to be exact. I am thinking I should see a doctor to be on the safe side because I have a small hernia above my navel that might just be ready to give me problems. I have had many untimely calls of nature or better yet DUMPCON-1 while running over the years, but my recent bouts seem more like some kind of mild diahoria that wont go away.

Just had a conversation with expert electro... cardiologist from Mayo Clinic in Rochester who had never heard of "Runner's Trots". He asked, "Is this common?" Yes What do they teach these doctors in medical school?

Thankfully (or not) the runners trots seem to effect me the next day, especially if I do something more strenuous than usual the day before. My second 5k left me suffering for 3 days, as a matter of fact. Some people might call this type of "regularity" a good thing, but not when you cramp after every time you eat. I'd almost just as soon have to take care of it during or immediately after the run and just be done with it. The only time I ever had a during-the-run episode was when a night of rather heavy indulgence in adult oriented beverages had preceeded it. That was SO not fun!

Bugs. There are somewhere between 2-3 million facts that doctors "need to know" to provide patient care. Of course, it is impossible for any human other than Scout to have all that knowledge. Subspecialists tend to know loads about their focal area, which is what you want when you need to see one. But they may know less about other areas. I have a very general medical knowledge (i.e., I am a generalist, not a specialist) and I did not learn about runner's trots until about 5 years after finishing medical school. And I am still learning...

Trent, I have a deep respect for doctors. I making fun that this guy could tell me everything about the heart and autonomic nervous system but didn't know about this. He wants to figure out why my blood volume was low and was concerned about the GI problems with running. He did not think this problem was healthy. Said, "If the tests come back negative we'll have to talk about your diet and training, I run 5-6 miles and never have diahria." I'm afraid he's going to mess with my running. I'm going to prove to him I can control this with diet, just no chocolate for me. Sad How bad for your body is the occassional squat in the trees on a long run?

True, but kills the morning run.

I take one OTC Imodium before any LR more than 6 miles or so. I have gastroparesis where my stomach empties wicked slowly so I also make sure to eat really light the night before a LR or race. If not, I may be enjoying dinner the next morning. Dead

If the "occasional" squat in the trees is bad for your health, then I'm a dead man.

On your deathbed, you won't wish that you'd spent more time at the office.  But you will wish that you'd spent more time running.  Because if you had, you wouldn't be on your deathbed.

Here's an article that might be of interest to many of you: http://runningtimes.com/Article.aspx?ArticleID=12326&PageNum=&CategoryID= I just started running last fall with the couch to 5k program, I not only had "runner's trots" but also blood. My GI told me to quit running because I had what is know as ischemic colon. Which means all the blood in your colon goes out to your heart and lungs while running and leaves the colon without a blood supply. Since the colon now thinks it's dying, blood rushes there repair the injured colon resulting in bloody diarrhea. That's how it was explained to me anyway. The doc told me to QUIT RUNNING, he had my husband convinced that I was only recking my health, long story made short, I kept running against my docs and my husbands wishes. I completed the c25k program and now I adjust my running times and level of intensity with how my intestines are feeling! Sorry for the graphics but I thought this might help someone! Barb
Try some chocolate the night before the run and then right after the run, it will work while your sleeping!

I have had this mid-run issue a few times, so I like to get one out before every run. I guess I am one of the lucky ones in that I am a fairly "regular" person. But with early morning runs during the week, sometimes this just doesn't happen. But definitely before the long runs, I need to make a pass...coffee usually helps. Stopping mid-run and making a beeline to the nearest tree/bush/side of building just sucks. Plus, I don't carry any tissues with me, so the rest of the run is invariably un-fun following one of these episodes. Dead

                                Great thread!

I just have piles of goals for 2013! I really want to blow it out, but I sure don't want to get too pooped to have mounds of fun. I've dumped some of my other sports hoping this will gain brownie points for me here. I'm tired of loafing around and hope to launch an impressive log for all to see soon! I'll admit I've kind of laid bricks and eggs in recent races, but I know I'll be busting ass in no time. You might say this is corny and that I'm full of it, but I know that I will squeeze out some big PRs this year. With a major push and perhaps some fartleks, I truly believe 2013 is going to be gas!
