10pm last night Dane is found in his room with the light on, reading...

If we get angry with him we're a couple of hypocrites, as did and I were known to pull the same stunt as kids. Blush This morning he says "I LOVE reading!"

That's funny Kirsten. Glenn (our 4 yo) does the same thing. I saw a light through the crack in the door one night and peaked in and he had his little camping lattern on in his bed and was reading a book to his stuffed puppy. I just let it go for the same reason you did.

Ha...there have even been days when his teacher has said "Dane was really sleepy today." Then we've had to explain why and she's all "aaahhh, gotcha" and grins knowingly. I have a feeling there are a lot of sleepy kids in her class for the same reason.

LOL
although I have a 2 1/2 year old, I can relate, he can recite Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See, and parts of The Very Hungry Caterpillar, and The Very Busy Spider, and has stayed up late paging, and reciting, through that, and has gotten up in the midst of the night just to do that. Dh would about to ask him to go back to bed, but I would whisper to dh, "let him." It's sooo cute. I have no doubt that he would end up that way too, he kind of is that way already, just not quite reading, but reciting as he goes throgh the pages.

Lisa, I'll bet he's an early reader if he's already doing that. The funny thing is that Dane kind of fought reading...a year ago he could read, but didn't really enjoy it. At some point in the past 6-9 months he did a 180 and is now reading at least 1.5 years ahead of grade level. Smile

Glad to see more boys are into reading!! Has Dane read any of the Magic Tree house books???? Those are a hit with Frankie. We thought about moving thei twins bedtime back to 8 again, however decided against it since both of them spend at least a half hour reading after going to bed.

Yep, we love the Magic Treehouse books, though I think Capt. Underpants has been a bigger hit. He reads those over and over...I think he has all of them, too (5 books in the series, maybe?). They are hilarious. He also eats up anything related to the Titanic. That's sort of his obsession. He says his favorite subject is History (he also really loves Science stuff--like father, like son).

I've heard of Captain underpants Blushr, just have never seen any of the books. I think those would be more of a hit with Katie than Frankie.

So does Dane come home from school with those books that weigh a ton and there is no way he'll be able to read the whole thing let alone a couple of chapters since the printing is so fine? For the longest time I didn't think Frankie would enjoy reading just cause of the material he'd bring home (not the kind of stuff that keeps you awake cause you can't stop reading).

BTW I used to read all during class and my teachers wouldn't say a thing. I thought they never knew lol but I gues they didn't want to say anything since they usually have a real hard time getting kids to read.

Yeah, the Capt. Underpants are definitely silly. From what you've said about the twins in the past they do strike me as more Katie books than something Frankie would get into. Dane is kind of a compromise of your kids' personalities.

Dane has a few beefier books. We were at B&N a while back and in the cheap racks found a HUGE Titanic book written by Robert Ballard (the guy who discovered the wreck back in the 80s)...lots of pics, details, stories, history. Very impressive book, but NOT a kids' book. He doesn't yet read that real intently, but he likes when we read it to him and he enjoys studying the pictures and reading the captions.

He's definitely a fan of science books with experiments, too. And they are learning about rainforests in school, so lately he's been giving us details about the different parts of the rainforest and what sorts of things live in the Amazon.

It would be funny to get Dane together with your kids to see how the 3 of them interact.

Plus kids who are reading aren't being disruptive or wasting class time. Wink I still remember when one of my classmates in 3rd grade called me a bookworm. I took it as a compliment. Smile

THEY WOULD HAVE A BLAST!!!

I'm hoping that Frankie will get more "well rounded". He does have a great sense of humor however it's dry more like british/deadpan, like his father and could get him into LOTS of trouble when he gets older.

I'll bet Frankie would crack me up! Eryn's DD has a sense of humor like that. It makes her seem far older than 8. When I talk to her I have to remind myself that she's only a year older than Dane. Sarcasm in little kids is really awesome, but I think you're right that it could get him in trouble. A lot of adults don't get sarcasm, so when it comes from kids it can be especially difficult to "get".
