Who has run it, and what's it like? I'm thinking ahead here....I'm running my first half in September of this year, and I won't make a decision about a marathon until then. Austin will be 5 months later, so I was thinking it would be do-able. I know I would need to do tons of hillwork, though. It's flat here, and Austin.....ain't.

Hopefully, someone else will chime in with info, I have run it twice but it's been several years and the course has changed (from looking at their course PDF). It wasn't a very hilly course though there were a few hills - nothing too bad. Part of the course used to run on "Marathon blvd" (which parallels N. Lamar over by 43rd) and I see that is no longer part of the course Sad. I do know that the race organization, expo and post-race partying was excellent! Also, that was my first and my 4th marathon and back then they used to give two (2) shirts out! One you got when you picked up your race packet and then you got a finishers shirt when and if you finished the race - pretty cool.
2008 Goals:
2000 miles for the year
100 mile week
Sub 3:10 marathon
Sub 19min 5K

You looked at other Marathon's in TX? White Rock which is in December is fairly flat.

Houston is in January and has a fairly fast (flat) course as well - although I think it fills up early so you might want to check if registration is still open and register early.

Is there a HM for Austin, also? That would be cool.

According to the race website, Houston is 74% full. Definitely register early.

Yes, they have a HM as well. My kids' pediatrician ran it this year and had a fantastic time.

Houston is about a 12 hour drive. Austin is 8 or so, but we love Austin/San Antonio/San Marcos, and could make a vacation out of it. White Rock is also a possibility--I just wasn't sure if it would be enough time.

She must be in the Panhandle or El Paso.

Only other ideas are they drive slow or stop a lot.

One year my family drove from Austin to Los Angeles. It impressed me that El Paso was about the halfway point of the trip! Texas IS big, but not nearly as big as Alaska, as DH is always reminding me (he lived there for 4 years).

Worst drive of my life, across Texas in the summer when the speed limit was 55 and a trooper lurked behind every mesquite tree. It took about a month, IIRC. At least we had satellite radio. Oh wait, no we didn't. We had AM radio. Arrgghhhh.... Tongue

Gotcha. I was asking because I was going to suggest you look at El Paso (March).

M2M is probably your closest option, but not a "city" marathon by any means, and probably not what most people would want to run for their first one. Timing wise, probably not a good option either, as it's in October.
