I know they were trying to bring it back this May and that got scrapped. Anyone have any word on if it will be back in 2009 or not? I am planning on running Shamrock in March but if Pittsburgh will be back in May, I will hold off and do that one. Just curious if anyone had any inside info... Thanks!!

No inside info, other than there's the desire to get it going again. That'd be nice. In my backyard. I'll see what I can find out on my club run tomorrow.

This is from my running store/club guy:

At this point I have heard nothing new although things are moving, just slowly. I am still hopeful for 2009 based on the info I am privvy to, however, unless a few more big sponsors step up soon it will be difficult to get it all set for 2009.

I'd sure like to see it return.

Virtually the same thing was reported by another paper last September.
Key wiggle words: Likely, pretty confident, hopeful.

A friend of mine who works for Dick's Corporate headquarters said it's definetely a go, and Dick's has pledged to be a large sponsor, just not "the" sponsor at this point.

Her feeling was the West Penn Allegheny Health Systems, Giant Eagle, or possibly even UPMC would make the final commitment and sponsor the marathon.

Regardless of who the sponsor is, it's great to see such a world class marathon on the verge of being revived.

Any idea what time of year they are looking at? I only do one marathon a year and was going to do Shamrock in VA BEach in 2009 but if Pittsburgh is a definite go I may do that one instead...I just want to find out as soon as possible before I register for VA Beach....

My running store says early May. A week or so after Boston, I think.
Store dude is pretty confident, because he's planning to offer training groups and asked if I wanted to help. I plan to.
I may learn more tomorrow at club run.
I'd be skeptical if it's UPMC, as they had been the sponsor, correct? Maybe they'll be a sponsor.

Of all the weekends...why did they have to pick the same one as The Flying Pig?! Rats! If they had at least done it on Saturday I would do both!

The article states the course will be virtually the same as the previous one. How tough was that course? I know the area is so hilly. Is the course brutally hilly?

I never ran it. I'll keep you posted. If I recall from spectating, there's one pretty good hill going into Oakland. Unsure of others. There's also a lot of flats.
