Calling early morning runners... (Read 3083 times)

Menace to Sobriety

Just finished a run and I feel great!  I went to bed later than I should have but having the clothes sitting out really helped.  I got up and walked over to the alarm as usual, reached up to hit snooze, but remembered my running gear was 5 feet away and turned it off and started getting dressed.  10 minutes later I was out the door running

Ain't it great having it done??

Janie, today I quit my job. And then I told my boss to go f*** himself, and then I blackmailed him for almost sixty thousand dollars. Pass the asparagus.

    Just Happy to Run

This thread is good.  I'm now 0/7 against my snooze button.  It's just become way to hot here for my usuallunch run so I've been trying to get a morning routine going...  I have to remember that I posted this tomorrow morning and see if I can get out the door instead of hitting snooze!

It is easy.  I wish I could sleep past 4:30 most nights.  For 14 yrs I have been getting up at 2:30. It is nice to sleep in till 4 if I am luck. DW really   on vacations!

Run until the trail runs out.

Routine, and will.  I switched to early mourning runs in the spring.  I get up at 4 am and have a definate routine.  Coffee, run, vitamins, breakfast.  The first little while it is difficult but once you manage it for a week your body should get used to it.

I can't run straight from bed.  I need my "thinkin'" time. Turning a light on right away helps.  Also instead of hitting the snooze button try moving to a chair.  I make my coffee and go downstairs.  It takes me a min. of a half an hour to get out the door.  I know this so I make provisions.  If you have to hit the snooze button 3 times before getting out of bed set your alarm that much earlier.  Also, as has been previously stated, try going to bed earlier, especially while you are training your body to wake up earlier.

          Beginner all over again

Focus about how good it will be to have your run behind you and be done for the day when you get home in the evening. This is my main motivation for getting out there

            I'm back!

I took six months off running, but I'm at it again

Goal Race:  28-week training Couch-to-HM   (jog-walk, hope to finish under 3:00)

I'm in Week #16 (but I took a month off in there!)   Count-Down 13 weeks!

              1) I'm asleep by 10PM

              2) I have two alarms: first my Lumie wakes me up at 4h28, then the stereo turnes on (it has an alarm) at 4h30.

              http://www.lumie.com/shop/products/bodyclock-sunray-100

              3) I turn on all the lights while moving through the house. Keeps me awake.

              4) I have 1or2 coffee's and change into my running stuff

              5) if for some reason I can't get my butt out the door I'll either do an 18min core routine or a 30min UB strength routine. After that, I'm all set and motivated to go for a one hour run. Note: I don't have to be at work till 8h45 with a 22min bike commute (or a 13min car commute).

              6) my dog starts whining if she hears me move around (she sleeps in one of the kids rooms).

              7) I always get up at the same time. If I don't, it's way harder to get out of bed.

I go running in the early morning, before my brain figures out what I'm up to.

I get up at 5:25 most AM's ... today got up at 4:55 ... I run with partners about half of my runs -- that really helped early on.  [By this I mean that it is pretty much impossible to sleep in when you know that someone else got up and is now waiting for you ... same motivation for them.]  So, if you enjoy the company and can find another early morning runner to share your pain ... all the better.  Good luck.

                2012= under-goaled

I get up at 4, have coffee and breakfast, and do my morning run starting at 5. Rain, snow, ice, whatever. I go. Outside.

I get back to the house by 6:30, DW and DD wake up around 7, so I get to join DD for breakfast (she's 7) before I head off to work. This works the best for me. Were I to wait until DW and DD wake up, I would likely not get the run in.

I don't even need to set an alarm anymore.

Somehow, waking up earlier is easier as you get older.

Going to sleep earlier seems to be easier, too.

There is a long dark road ahead of me.

Yeah, regardless of whether or not there was any intent on your part... It's not unusual for me to sit watching a movie with the family only to wake up alone in the dark hours later. Geez, I'm only 40...

Just curious if you had any repeat success? Or was it a one hit wonder? I like the idea of getting up and getting my run in before the kids wake up at 6, but I have a hard time going to bed early enough.

                          1. Go to sleep 7-9 hours prior to your run.

                          2. Set your alarm clock to designated time.

                          3. When your alarm clock goes off sit up and lean against your bed.

                          4. When you're more awake turn on the lights.

                          5. Go run.

Make sure you move your alarm clock far enough so the snooze button is out of reach unless you get up and move to push it.

Getting easier...I was only successful two days out of M-F of last week when I posted this but I am 2 for 2 this week and finding it easier to get up.  The key for me was to set my cell phone alarm for 5 minutes before my alarm clock and when the phone goes off I lay awake a minute or two and get up.  I think it has something to do with knowing their is no point going back to sleep when my main alarm is going off in a couple minutes anyway.

+1. I set my alarm for 5:45, and then hit the snooze for 15 min, until I get up at 6. it's quite effective - I haven't missed an AM run yet.

My recent morning runs have been at 10 or 10:30 on a Sunday when I had hockey games.  For the first time in a couple months I actually had an early morning run, at 6:45.  Nothing earth-shattering - a slower 2.5 miles, but it feels good to already hit the log once for the day and I feel better at this point in the morning than I usually do.

The hardest thing was getting out of bed at 6:30.  After about 10 steps on the treadmill I felt fine, just a little tight.  It would be cool if I could do these once or twice a week.

Hopefully it loosened me up, I want to do a tempo run tonight.
