Calling early morning runners... (Read 3083 times)

My snooze won the battle for quite some time.  I gave up running for a year because snooze would win and I never had enough time before work and I was too tired after work (I'm a high school math teacher with 3 young boys at home).

My driving force for getting up early is my wife.  I can set the alarm for whatever time I want, but if I wake her up with the snooze, I'm in BIG TROUBLE.

I've been getting up @ 5:00 AM for a 5:30 run for the last several weeks. I just really like those early hours (like the late ones) when everyone else is asleep.

I was talking a couple of weeks ago with an amazing veteran runner. He said something that really stuck with me, and it makes the getting up so much easier. He said: You're going to be tired no matter what time you get up.

HOW TRUE IS THAT???  If I get up at 5:00, sure I'm tired...but I'm just as tired at 6 or 7! At least by getting on up, I get in a run, and the entire day goes better!

I also find that at least half a cup of coffee helps me wake up and run better.

      HTH!

I finally got myself up this morning to run. I have been wanting to do this for months but always seem to hit the snooze bar and ended up running after work. Today is going to be hotter than it has been in a while so I really wanted to get up and out in the AM. I set my alarm, hit snooze once and talked myself out of sleeping another hour and jumped out of bed to go for a run.

It was a sluggish run as I knew it would be and I never hit my full stride. I felt great though and felt like I really accomplished something.

Burlsgirl was right when she said "You're going to be tired no matter what time you get up." Sure I was tired but when I was up and about, it was just like any other morning.

Here's hoping that this is the start of a very good habit.

I'm far from a morning person and I hardly ever get out more than 15 minutes before I need to be at work. But I came across this article on how to become an early riser. I haven't really tried it, but it seems like good advice and if I decide to start getting up early I'll probably give his suggestions a shot.

I'm going to go ahead and change your early of 5am to my early of 9am. Smile. That's the time I should be rolling into the school's parking lot to go on a run with my teammates. So far it's happened about twice since school let out...three weeks ago.

I'm still fighting it. Some days I can get up and go run 6 miles and feel great. Other days and I wake up at 1pm and think "Why the hell did I just sleep for 14 hours?". I then proceed to run one mile and tell myself I accomplished something.

My only advice is to take advantage of the days where you don't feel like laying in bed and get the miles in.

I came across this article on how to become an early riser.

So if you want to be an early riser just get up when your alarm clock goes off?  How insightful!!!  This is almost as earth shattering as my secret on how to break your PR: Run faster.

During the school year, I generally get up at 4:00 AM to go for a run that gets me out the door between 4:15 and 4:30.  I think it helps to get used to getting up at an early hour and not have to go for a run.  Record a tv show that you like and then get up early to watch it.  Reward yourself for getting up early by making a good breakfast.  You may be more motivated to get up if you know you don't have to do too much.  Once you are a little more used to getting up early then you can try actually moving your body and going for a run.

Thank you for taking the time to read my signature!

Thanks to KMB for the quaote "I have never finished a morning run and wished I had stayed in bed". I thought of that in the mornings when I force myself out of bed. It has worked as a little added motivation.
I HATE mornings!  You have to make it YOUR routine.  PERIOD.  I do have some advise that has helped me:

                  1.  Make it your routine.  Set the alarm for the same time every day until you get up!  If you have the will, it will happen.  As a Jedi Master once said, "DO or DO NOT.  There is no TRY".

                  2.  Drink a LOT of water before going to bed.  When my alarm goes off, I have to pee...  If you don't have to, drink more water the next night.

                  3.  Have everything ready to go the night before.  You don't have to think, just go.  (I usually have a small cup of coffee and a piece of fruit too)...

                  4.  Have kids that wake up early and a grouchy Spouse.  OK, that's a little drastic, but if I'm not up by myself - I either get elbowed by my wife to get out a bed, or I have kids ready to be fed.  I'd rather be running!

                  5.  Even if you miss the run, GET UP!  Even if it's the weekend.  All it takes is one vacation or weekend of sleeping in, and it's all over.  If you need the sleep, take naps!  That's how I reward my self on the weekends for getting up early every day.   I guess it's like AA - take it one day at a time.

Don't get me wrong.  I STILL hate mornings, but if it's the only time you can do it like me.  Just do it!  Routine, Routine, Routine.

                  I hope that helps!

Maybe I'm dumbed down from years of reading and writing powerpoint presentations, but I sure wish dude would just throw a few bullet points out there and get on with it.  I could barely make it though that thing without falling asleep.

Maybe it's not helpful, but I get excited thinking about what run I'm going to do in the morning. If I'm thinking about that when I wake up, that'll motivate me to get up. Better than any alarm clock for me. Oh, and drink a lot of water before bed. Smile

In all seriousness, I just converted over to mornings this week (beat the heat). I suffered the first day at work but seem to be on track now. I'm really enjoying the mornings - much to my surprise.
