DW and I previously had two English Bulldogs but they had to go when Zoe came along.....They didn't want to play nice with her and they were about 60 and 70 lbs. Right now we have a Boston Terrier and he is great with the baby.

I have always wanted a weimaraner but the wifey convinced me that now is not the right time with the baby. I WILL own one someday.

I had one as a kid. They are beautiful dogs but my memory was that she was VERY high-strung.

Beautiful, yes... but I always read that they require a LOT of exercise and discipline to be a good pet.
    Here's some good information.
    More about their personality

Some excerpts from the link above:

"They usually have a strong prey drive and may not be good with cats or other small animals. Weimaraners typically have a stronger protective instinct than other hunting breeds. They are often natural guardians or watch dogs. "

"Weimaraners embody all of the negative characteristics of the hunting breeds. They are stubborn and strong-willed and try to get away with everything possible." The Weimaraner's "pushy" personality requires that their owner be a firm, fair leader. Without clear leadership, a Weimaraner will take over a household."

"Weimaraners MUST have regular opportunities to vent their energy and do interesting things. Otherwise they will become rambunctious and bored -- which they usually express by barking and massive destructive chewing. Bored Weimaraners are famous for chewing through drywall, ripping the stuffing out of sofas, and turning your yard into a moonscape of giant craters."

Sorry Jeremy, but I guess I agree with your wife! Sounds like a hard dog to manage with very young children. Definitely sounds like a breed you want to make sure you can handle before you bring one home.

The only Weimaraner that I know of is one that is usually in the fenced back yard of a house that I pass on most of my runs. They have a big "beware of Weimaraner" sign on the gate. There have been 3 occasions when I passed the house, and that dog was outside of the fence. It rushed me all 3 times barking its head off and scaring the hell out of me. It never actually bit me though, like most dogs i encounter. It is a big scary dog though and gets a little more aggressive than the usual dog who is just making sure you don't get in his yard. I was telling myself I'd give the owners 3 chances before I called animal control on them. Next time I'm definitely calling. So I guess I'd have to recommend against getting one. Undecided

MTA: Of course not all Weimaraner's have this personality. I'm sure there are some that make great pets. I have a Jack Russell / Rat terrier, and that dog is a nightmare. She is so high strung she drives us insane. I know other people who have them, and some are really friendly. My point is, with some breeds you have a 50/50 chance you'll get the bad personality traits. I'd suggest going to the pound and picking the friendliest dog there.
