dumbest thing you've done on a long run? (Read 1804 times)

what are lions?

on one warm, spring run couple years back, i thoughtlessly opted to carry a 50/50 mix of seltzer and grapefruit juice.  well, it did cool me down, tho not quite as intended.  'sprayed' is perhaps more apt. and i really should have known better...

    Giant Flaming Dork

Going on an 11 mile run without drinking anything beforehand and not having anywhere to get a drink on the run.  I started looking at discarded gatorade bottles along the road, wondering if any of the leftover liquid inside was safe to drink...

        side point:

        • seltzer has a basic pH
        • grapefruit juice is an acid

No wonder you got an extra spray!

I'm running somewhere tomorrow. It's going to be beautiful. I can't wait.

Was running along a run, talking to someone else... Not paying close attention...

I was in front of a gas station, and I was running next to an older sign that was on the ground level that said how much gas was...

I saw a metal bar on the ground, and hopped over it.

What I didn't realize is that there was a top bar and I jumped through what normally would have been the other side of the sign that told what the prices were.  The top bar hit me on my upper lip and knocked me on my butt...

I finished the run and got 5 stitches...

Getting back in shape... Just need it to be a skinnier shape...

I once miscalculated how far I had went and nhow far the next portion would take me.  Ended up with close to 30 miles when it was ll said and done.  Ran the first part by myself and committed to running the second part with some friends and there you have it.  Not bad but a bit further than the 24 I had planned.

Side not is a few weeks later I PRed for the marathon distance.

My long run was feeling good.  I'd had a bit of soreness in my shin over the past week or two but it wasn't bothering me.  There was snow on the ground and it was slippery so my stride was a bit off.  Despite all of that, I was feeling really good so I picked up the pace... it should have been at about a 9 minute mile, but I did around 7:45s.  About two hours after I finished, my shin was in such pain that I couldn't stand on that leg, and my next run was 7 weeks later.

                   Love this!

I brought along a whiner.   HAD TO cut my run short.

Ran a long run on christmas this year, was up since 3 and left around 9 or 10, and it was sleeting/windy and 0 visibility. Had a rough cold for 2 weeks after that.

Have to be careful at the end of a long run.  A few weeks ago, I ran across an intersection not realizing that it was a sort of blind spot (the road curves) and I might not be visible to cars until it's too late because of trees in the median.  A SUV almost hit me, thankfully the driver was more alert than I was.
I once forced a bagel about 40 minutes before a 26.2 miler; shmuck.

If we don’t try we’ll never know. At least I can find out how good I can be.  I can have an answer at the end of the days, and have a hell of a good time with the process. -Desi Davila

Not on a long run but a 10 miler a couple of weeks ago. I was with my dog down on the beach because it was the only place other than the road where there was no snow. Had a nice 5 going up, then he follows some girls up to the boardwalk. Leash him up and I decide we will try the road for a spell. Ran another mile or so and the dog starts limping, bad.He won't put any weight on his right front paw. I had no phone, no money, nothing. It's about 20* out and I'm thinking I have to carry the dog back 4 miles to the car. Fortunately for us, some nice ladies saw our predicament and offered us a ride. As soon as they dropped us back at the car, the dog was fine.

#1     ran my first & only (so far) full marathon in 81 or 82 at Av. of Giants.  goal was 4 hrs  but got caught up in running/talking with a faster friend.  at 18 miles was moving along at 7:30 pace, well you guessed it, by mile 20 was shot, walked 2 or 3 miles, finished last few miles at slow jog (after someone ran by & yelled at me) & 4:09.  most dissappointing race I've run.

                            #  2  again running with a friend and in the early 80"s & not paying attention on last mile to finish at college track, ran smack into the back of a parked Toyota truck. Well the truck won that one.  right arm was numb for 2 days & side was sore for several days.  stupid, stupid.

                            # 3  going on long run with no bushes around, & no bathrooms on route while having stomach problems.  needless to say always carry tp with me now (same as when hiking in Cascades).

A 16 mile loop I run from time to to has two stores evenly seperated that I stop at and buy a water.  The first water stop went fine, but the second store was unexplainably closed.  11 miles in, no water... with only an Espresso GU, I made a snowball, squirted GU on it, and ate it... It was actually tasty.  I can't imagine what people driving by must have thought, seeing my running down the road eating a brown snowball.

                              325th place or bust!

Eight miles into an 18-miler was suddenly feeling knee pain.  Thought I could loosen it up and kept going.  Ended up doing 17 with the last 4 being jog/walk.  Since then my running has been down to almost nothing.  Seven weeks later it's starting to do better.
